Case Report: Staged Embolization and Sclerotherapy in Treating a Complicated Arteriovenous Malformation of Right Lower Leg

Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is a rare vascular anomaly with direct connection between an artery and a vein. High-pressure arterial blood flowing directly into the vein will result in venous wall degradation, and will elicit a spectrum of symptoms such as tissue edema, skin dystrophy, distal ischemia, vascular aneurysm and heart failure. 10% high-flow AVMs in lower limbs are susceptible to limb-threatening complications and hard to cure completely. No ideal modality has been established in treating complicated AVMs, while image-guided endovascular intervention is widely accepted as the first-line therapy.
