Very long-term effects of conservatively treated blunt thoracic trauma: a retrospective analysis

Trauma is the third largest proportion of mortalities in all age groups after cardiovascular disease and cancer, and is the main cause of death in patients aged under 40. Thoracic trauma is present in nearly half of polytrauma patients [1,2]. Absolute incidence varies greatly depending on geographical location, but blunt thoracic trauma is more common with relative incidence being estimated at 72%-83,5% versus penetrating trauma at 16,5%-28% [3,4]. A large part of managing blunt thoracic trauma consists of analgesia, achieving respiratory stability, early mobilization and chest physiotherapy.
