Depressive Symptoms, Sleep Quality, and Pain Are Associated With Frailty in Nursing Home Residents During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has been one of the most serious outbreaks over the past century (Cummings et al., 2020). The high mortality and poor prognosis observed in older individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 are natural consequences of the elevated prevalence of comorbidities, and weakened immune systems, and the most important result is frailty within this distinct population (Hussien et al., 2021). Fried et al. characterized frailty as the fulfillment of at least three out of five phenotypic criteria including low grip strength, low energy, slowed waking speed, low physical activity, and/or unintentional weight loss (Fried et al., 2001).
