Regional Anesthesia for Pediatric Urologic Surgery – What’s New?

Urologic surgeries are amongst the most commonly performed surgeries in children. These procedures require effective pain management to ensure optimal postoperative outcomes and patient comfort. Although the use of regional anesthesia is commonplace among the adult perioperative population, the widespread application in children has lagged behind. In urology specifically, barriers to universal implementation have included lack of training for new ultrasound-guided nerve blocks, fear of unrecognized complications in anesthetized children and adverse surgical events related to the presence of local anesthetic in the surgical field.
