Nursing care of the patient hospitalized with heart failure: Executive summary: A Scientific statement from the American association of heart failure nurses

Over 6.5 million adults in the United States (US) have a diagnosis of heart failure (HF), and this prevalence is projected to increase to over 8 million people by 20301. HF is a clinical syndrome with symptoms and/or signs caused by a structural and/or functional cardiac abnormality and corroborated by elevated natriuretic peptide levels and/or objective evidence of pulmonary or systemic congestion2. HF is the primary diagnosis for US hospitalizations with approximately 1.3 million each year and remains the most common cause of hospitalization for patients 65 years or older.
