Zeb1 maintains long-term adult hematopoietic stem cell function and extramedullary hematopoiesis

Epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a mechanism that is utilized in the fundamental physiologic processes of embryogenesis, wound healing, and tissue development where epithelial cells reduce their cell polarity and cell adhesion properties while they acquire mesenchymal-like cell characteristics and enhanced migratory potential [1,2]. Deregulated EMT has been observed in multiple pathological settings including organ fibrosis that can cause organ failure [3], and cancer, where increased EMT mediated migratory capacity of cancer cells promotes metastasis and, therefore, therapy resistance [4].
