Endocrine activity of dysfunctional adipose tissue: Cardiovascular risk and progression markers

Adipokines are the main proteins released by adipose tissue, i.e., leptin and adiponectin. Leptin was discovered in 1994 by Friedman, and its main role was related to food intake and metabolism regulation [1]. One year later, adiponectin's discovery showed a new adipokine with protective properties for metabolism, inflammation, and insulin resistance [2]. Both proteins are released by mature adipocytes, and their expression levels are higher in subcutaneous than visceral adipose tissue [3]. Several reasons might explain these regional differences, such as progenitor cell quantity, lipogenesis, or lipolysis activities.
