Predictive value of functional disability scales among stroke survivors: A long-term mortality evaluation in a Brazilian stroke cohort

Stroke burden related to disability and loss of independence in daily activities has a great impact on mortality.1 This is particularly true in low-middle income countries (LMICs) where more than 70  % of strokes and post-stroke disabilities.2 In Latin America, stroke is the second leading cause of death. Stroke represents a huge burden in Brazil which has one of the highest rates.3,4 Since late 1960, ischemic heart disease and stroke have been the predominant causes of death in Brazil.5 Accor ding to the National Health Survey (“Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde”, PNS) 2013, there were 2,231,000 self-reported strokes and 568,000 stroke cases with severe disabilities in Brazil.
