What the New Definition of MASLD Left Behind: Dual Etiology With Viral Hepatitis

We read with great interest the published recently article about the prevalence of steatotic liver diseases by Kalligeros et  al.1 Undoubtedly, the nomenclature for fatty liver disease was in need of revision. In 2020, Eslam et al2 introduced the metabolic dysfunction–associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) nomenclature, which subsequently was widely accepted and implemented by various national and pan-national societi es. In practice and research, MAFLD has proven superior to the previous name, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), in several respects.
