Sedation and analgesia strategies for non-invasive mechanical ventilation: A systematic review and meta-analysis

In patients with acute or chronic respiratory failure, noninvasive mechanical ventilation (NIV) can effectively relieve dyspnea and minimize respiratory muscle fatigue. It is commonly used to treat individuals with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) and acute cardiogenic pulmonary edema.1,2 Compared with invasive mechanical ventilation, NIV reduces patients ’ suffering and the occurrence of ventilator-associated pneumonia.3,4 Furthermore, according to the European Respiratory Society/American Thoracic Society (ERS/ATS) clinical practice recommendations, NIV should be the first line of treatment for acute respiratory failure (ARF) brought on by AECOPD .
