Mild traumatic brain injury: not always a mild injury

ConclusionsSurvivors differed substantially from Mortalities after mild TBI in terms of comorbidities, intoxicants, and insurance status. Independent variables most strongly associated with in-hospital death following mild head injury included age  ≥ 65, intubation in the ED, admission hypotension, and comorbidities (particularly ESRD and immunosuppression). Increased clinical vigilance, including a mandatory period of clinical observation, for patients with these risk factors should be considered to optimize outcomes and potentially mi tigate death after mild TBI.
