Sunday Sermonette: Desperate to get this over with

neJob now goes on a three chapter rant saying the same shit over and over again that he already said nineteen times. I ' m really sorry about this, I ' m as anxious to come to the end of it as you are. So I ' m going to post three chapters today, they ' re all Job yammering on so why not? It ' s just more of God and His creation are beyond understanding; and I ' m righteous, I don ' t deserve this, but nevertheless I ' m not going to say anything bad about God.  I ' ll just make a couple of notes.First, all of the stuff Job says we can ' t possibly understand -- notably in Chapter 28 -- we do understand, at least a lot more than people did in Job ' s time. Nature is no longer so mysterious to us, nor do we need God to explain it. Second, in case you didn ' t know, Sheol and Abaddon are names for the realm of the dead -- thought to be an underworld. We caught a glimpse of it before in Samuel. In other words, the Hebrew Bible does indeed have a concept of an afterlife, but it seems to be very limited -- a sluggish existence, little more than sleep or semi-consciousness.26 Then Job answered:2 “How you have helped him who has no power!    How you have saved the arm that has no strength!3 How you have counseled him who has no wisdom,    and plentifully declared sound knowledge!4 With whose help have you uttered words,    and whose spirit has come forth from you?5 The shades below tremble,&n...
