Treatment Tolerance and Depression Improvement in the Elderly > 70 Years Old with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Background: Currently, TMS is FDA-cleared for those 18 to 70 years of age. Our study looked at those above 70 years of age. Eighteen patients over 70 (averaging 74.6 years old), all with resistant depression, were studied using Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). Two were males. Our findings demonstrated improvement in mood, with minimal side effects and no seizures in those>70, and suggest the age limit guidelines could be higher, allowing TMS treatment to more people with difficult-to-treat depression.
