Use of high-flow nasal oxygen for pregnant women with COVID-19 in the labour ward setting

In March 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) a pandemic.1 The virus is transmitted through airborne droplets, close person-to-person contact and direct contact with objects or materials carrying the virus.2 Once the virus has entered the host, it replicates in the lower respiratory tract leading to an aggressive inflammatory response.3 In some individuals, this inflammatory immune response is sufficient to clear the infection, however for others a dysfunctional immune response is triggered, causing a cytokine storm and widespread lung inflammation.
