Environment and menopause: The best time for action is now

The function of the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis is based on the pulsatile secretion of the hypothalamic gonadotrophin regulating hormone, which controls the secretion of pituitary gonadotrophins; the latter interact with ovarian receptors to regulate sex hormone production. On the other hand, estrogenic receptors in the hypothalamic nucleus regulate the HPG axis [1,2]. Exogenous or endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) can unintentionally disrupt this intricate communication system, leading to adverse health effects.
