Overlapping Presentation of Group A Streptococcus and Upper Respiratory Infection  in a Pediatric Patient: A Case Report

Group A streptococcus (GAS), a gram-positive bacteria, is the most common bacterial etiology in acute pharyngitis, accounting for 20% to 30% of all pediatric cases (Ashurst& Edgerley-Gibb, 2022). GAS pharyngitis is a risk of subsequent complications, including acute glomerulonephritis, streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, and acute rheumatic fever, if not recognized and treated promptly (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2023). Worldwide, GAS pharyngitis is estimated at nearly 288 million episodes annually in children aged 5 –14 years (Miller et al., 2022).
