What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Different Renal Replacement Therapies?
Discussion Kidneys are amazing in that they filter the blood, eliminate toxins, balance fluids and electrolytes plus have a lot of reserve to do the job they need to do even when injured. Therefore, depending on the problem, chronic renal disease (CRD) often allows time before renal replacement therapy (RRT) is needed. RRT currently is dialysis (peritoneal or hemodialysis) or renal transplant. In general, the patient’s own kidneys do the best job for them but there is always a balance between the problems of CRD and its management, versus the potentially improved renal function with RRT. RRT itself though has a diffe...

Mechanical activation of TRPV4 channels controls albumin reabsorption by proximal tubule cells
In this study, we showed that the ion channel TRPV4 modulated the endocytosis of albumin and low–molecular weight proteins in the proximal tubule. TRPV4 was found at the basolateral side of proximal tubule cells, and its mechanical activation by cell stretching induced Ca2+ entry into the cytosol, which promoted endocytosis. Trpv4–/– mice presented with mild proximal tubule dysfunction under basal conditions. To challenge endocytic function, the permeability of the glomerular filter was altered by systemic delivery of angiotensin II. The proteinuria induced by this treatment was more severe in Trpv4&ndash...

Is kidney failure a man's disease?
(ERA-EDTA) A new analysis of the ERA-EDTA Registry [1] reveals a striking gender difference in the incidence and prevalence of end-stage renal disease. Two thirds of all dialysis patients in Europe are male. It seems beyond hormonal effects that hypertension, diabetes and glomerulonephritis/sclerosis are the main driver of the gender gap. However, it is possible to prevent and treat hypertension and diabetes effectively and thus reduce the number of patients requiring dialysis. (Source: EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health)

How Does Pediatric Sj ö gren Syndrome Present?
Discussion Sjögren Syndrome (SS) is named for Swedish ophthalmologist Henrik Sjögren who published a case series in 1933 describing patients with dry eyes and arthritis. SS is a “chronic autoimmune inflammatory exocrinopathy” that is characterized by lymphocytic infiltration of the lacrimal and salivary glands and has various degrees of systematic involvement. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca and xerostomia are the main clinical symptoms. Sicca is a Latin word meaning dry. Improve Kidney Function With IV Laser Treatment
If you're one of the more than 20 million Americans who suffer from chronic kidney disease (CKD), your doctor has probably told you there isn't much they can do for you. Mainstream medicine doesn't have a cure for CKD. What they do have is a lot of drugs to treat the symptoms of it. And most of the drugs will leave you worse off than before you started taking them… Like ESAs, which are prescribed to treat anemia caused by chronic kidney disease. These dangerous drugs can cause strokes, heart attacks, blood clots and seizures. And if your kidneys fail, your only options are dialysis or a kidney transplant....
