The combination of depression and obesity associated with increased incidence of subsequent total knee arthroplasty

Purpose: Symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disorder in the United States and is projected to affect more than 67 million Americans by 2030. Approximately one third of patients with knee OA experience significant progression of cartilage degradation, knee pain, and disability, leading to greater healthcare utilization and subsequent total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Depression and obesity are each individually associated with worse OA pain and pain progression but are also risk factors for poor outcomes and complication following TKA.
