Sex Differences in Hippocampal-dependent Memory and the Hippocampal Lipidome in Adolescent Rats Raised on Diets With or Without DHA

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) is necessary for the optimal development of the central nervous system and spatial memory [1 –3]. In North America, intakes of DHA by pregnant women have been estimated to be under 100 mg/d [4,5] while there are several advisories from expert groups and associations recommending an intake of 200 mg/d of DHA during pregnancy and lactation [6–8]. There is also a recent recommendation for an intake of 1000mg/d of DHA during pregnancy to reduce premature birth by the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids [9].
