Thread Starter Interview sharing Follow 2 days ago 2d ago I’ve been trying to develop a comprehensive ethical case study to refer to for euthanasia if it comes up in interviews and and I’ve looked at the Archie battersbee case. One thing I keep coming back to is withholding life sustaining treatment is essentially passive euthanasia isn’t it? With the battersbee case he was essentially brain dead: -he is unable to make his own decision (lack of mental capacity cause brain stem death + gillick competence although not relevant) so pt autonomy isnt necessarily relevant. -Although though his parents wished for his life support to be continued citing religious beliefs and possibility of healing it would not be in the patients best interest with regards to Beneficience -For him to die with dignity without prolonging his condition speaks to nonmaleficence as HCPs should “do no harm” to minimise pt harm or distress.
