The 2022 recipients of the APA Distinguished Scientific Contribution Awards were recognized by the 2021 Board of Scientific Affairs and selected by the 2021 Committee on Scientific Awards. For pioneering theory and research revealing the powerful and dynamic influence of cultures on the human mind. As a founder of modern cultural psychology, Shinobu Kitayama’s insightful analyses of Western psychological theories, combined with novel and incisive experimental methods, have moved the field beyond a near-exclusive focus on European American contexts and participants toward the goal of a comprehensive psychology. His research on the significance of independent and interdependent social orientations for cognition, emotion, and motivation, combined with his initiation of the field of cultural neuroscience, has advanced understandings of how cultures ‘get under the skin.’ His perspectives and wisdom have diversified the field and inspired students and colleagues around the world.
