A pressing need and opportunity to standardize care in neurointerventionalsurgery

Neurointerventional surgery is complex and multifaceted, with much of the scope of practice in both hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke outside the direction offered by randomized clinical trials. The gaps in guidance for clinicians have been filled in many instances by recommendations from expert panels, such as the Society of Neurointerventional Surgery’s Standards and Guidelines committee. The guidelines created by this and other societal committees attempt to summarize the available data within a given topic and provide a corresponding level of evidence to provide clinicians with the most up to date direction for evidence based practice. In neurointervention, however, due to the relative paucity of high quality data, levels of evidence attributed to individual recommendations are often limited by the rigor of the available literature.
