HPV vaccination and HPV-related malignancies: impact, strategies and optimizations toward global immunization coverage

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is part of the Papillomaviridae family of double-stranded DNA viruses that infect epithelial cells of both the skin and the genital and oral mucosa [1]. There are more than 200 HPV genotypes; approximately 13 are considered high-risk (HR) or oncogenic to humans, with HPV16 and 18 causing more than 70% of all HPV-related malignancies in men and women [2 –3]. Low risk types (HPV 6 and 11 being the most frequent) induce genital warts and recurrent respiratory papillomatosis [2].
