Healthcare Should Be Invisible
What if healthcare worked as an unseeable fairy mother with a swarm of digital helpers? In the background, many digital tools, smart algorithms, health trackers and wearables would work for your well-being discreetly, you could be sure that you are taken care of, but you would only sense that on rare occasions. How would you fancy the invisible healthcare system? The Medical Futurist believes that we should move in that direction. Healthcare should be what Zorg showed us in The Fifth Element Do you remember the scene from the brilliant Luc Besson movie, The Fifth Element, where Gary Oldman as one of the leading antagonist...

Using AI To Determine if Your Radiologist Appointment is On Time
It ’s just as difficult to predict if your doctor is running on schedule as it is to draw your own blood. Fortunately, a team of researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital has figured out a way to eliminate those frustrating long waits by developing a machine learning technique designed to accur ately predict radiology appointment wait times.Long wait times are a serious source of contention for patients and physicians. In order to meet fee-for-service quotas, doctors must over-book their patient schedules so they can make sure they ’re earning a consistent salary. However, this appointment booking system only cau...

Could ride-hailing platforms solve the problems of transportation in healthcare?
Patients living in rural, suburban or urban areas with poor infrastructure often don’t have the proper means to get to the doctor’s appointment on time. In extreme cases, they could even wait for emergency situations so they can call an ambulance and receive care in a hospital. In the last months, both giant ridesharing companies, Uber and Lyft announced non-emergency medical transportation services, while start-ups, such as Circulation also promise to deal with the issue. Could smartphones and networked services solve transportation in healthcare? Why is getting to the doctor such a hassle? There is a little village i...

How is the NHS performing?
The King's Fund - The King ’s Fund published its first quarterly monitoring report in April 2011 as part of our work to track, analyse and comment on the changes and challenges the health and care system is facing. This is the 25th report and aims to take stock of what has happened over the past quarter. We find that more p atients are facing long waits for hospital treatment, with those experiencing the longest waits often most in need of treatment. With demand for services continuing to rise it's very unlikely that meeting waiting time targets will become more achievable, with implications for how the NHS...

How Time Can Move Backward For Immigrants Waiting for Green Cards
Many Americans want immigrants to “get in line.” But they cannot do so on their own. They need to get a sponsor, either a U.S. citizen family member or a U.S. employer, to petition the government to grant them permanent residency (a “green card”). Even if immigrants do obtain sponsors, there isn’t just one line to get into . Rather, immigrants haveseparate lines based on the type of sponsorship and their country of origin, and these lines all move at different speeds. Even two immigrants working in essentially the same position whose employer petitions for them on thesame day can end up receiving their green card...

Ranking the world ’s health systems: These results may surprise you
I was recently by the New York Times’ the Upshot to rank eight health care systems they had chosen: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Singapore, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. This forced me to think about a pretty fundamental question: what do we want from a health care system? What does an ideal health care system look like? I would argue that most people want a health care system where they can get timely access to high-quality, affordable care and one that also promotes innovation of new tests and treatments. But underlying these sentiments are a lot of important issues that need unpack...

Access and waiting times in children and young people's mental health services
This report examines new data on access to specialist treatment for children and young people with mental health problems, and the waiting times they face. It finds that children with mental health problems face barriers when seeking access to mental health services. It also finds that, over the last year, overall waiting times (including both assessment and treatment) have fallen – yet there remains substantial variation across England. This data was obtained by EPI through a Freedom of Information request.ReportEPI - publications (Source: Health Management Specialist Library)
