There Is No Good Reason to Block Afghan Refugees
ConclusionThe United States should make an open ‐ended commitment to evacuate and resettle Afghans in the United States, cognizant of legitimate security and health concerns. Of special interest are those Afghans and their families who aided American forces as their lives are now in serious danger. The major arguments against such resettleme nt are unconvincing. If ever there were a situation where the refugee system should be expanded rapidly to account for larger numbers of people facing death, this is it. (Source: Cato-at-liberty)

In Afghanistan, Lies and Delusions to the Bitter End
Justin Logan“There’s going to be no circumstance where you see people being lifted off the roof of an embassy … of the United States from Afghanistan. It is not at all comparable.”That was howPresident Joe Biden responded on July 8 to a question regarding possible parallels between the withdrawal from South Vietnam in 1975 and the then ‐pending withdrawal from Afghanistan. It is now clear that the administration ’s assessment of the likely consequences was wrong. Three things are worth considering:U.S. policy in Afghanistan has been based on self ‐delusion and outright lying to the American people a...

Amazon Eliminates Marijuana Screening for New Hires
Jeffrey Miron and Pedro Braga SoaresAmazon recentlyannounced that it will no longer include marijuana in the company ’s drug screening program for new hires (other than for positionsregulated by the Department of Transportation). Amazon says marijuana will instead be treated like alcohol, which means “impairment checks” on the job site and testing for all drugs and alcohol after job incidents.Drug screening and testing arewidespread in the US, covering nearlyhalf of all workplaces. But Amazon ’s announcement, and the recent spate ofmarijuana medicalizations and legalizations, have prompted discussion of who should ...

Memorial
I usually do a Memorial Day post, so okay I ' m late this year. I noticed yesterday a common trope, about remember those who " died defending our freedom. " (Here, for example, the Veep.)  Err, no. Or for the most part no. The origins of Memorial Day are a bit obscure, but it appears that the earliest precedents were remembrances at the graves of Confederate dead, and indeed the first official observances were in former Confederate states. I ' ll grant you that the Union army dead had fought in the cause of freedom for people who are now at least nominally a part of our national community, so put one credit on the...

The Dangers of Replacing the 2001 AUMF
John GlaserPresident Biden ’s announcement in April, and again in his first State of the Union address, that the U.S. military will be withdrawing from Afghanistan must have seemed to many Americans to be an inflection point. But if pulling out of Afghanistan is thought to mark an end to the post‐9/11 wars, think ag ain.Almost as soon as Biden could give the official orders to withdraw, reporting clarified that the new policy was by no means equivalent to ending the war. “With withdrawal preparations ramping up,” theWall Street Journalreported in March, “U.S. military commanders want bases for troops, drone...

Military Involvement in Domestic Surveillance: Cato FOIA Lawsuit Seeks Answers
Patrick G. EddingtonOver the last year, much of the focus of civil liberties advocates has been on the potential scope of law enforcement –federal, state, and local–monitoring of activists protesting the murder of George Floyd and other people of color by police officers. In late May 2020, then‐Attorney General William Barrauthorized the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to conduct surveillance of protestors (Cato has a FOIA pending with DoJ to determine whether that authority remains in effect). The Department of Homeland Security conductedaerial surveillance over at least 15 U.S. cities for the same pur...

COVID-19: Learning From Bitter Political Experience?
Ryan BourneWhy did some countries deal with COVID-19 better than others?Books, academic journal articles, and PhD dissertations will be written on that subject, with analysis having to contend with a vast array of country ‐specific variables that could, conceivably, have affected public health outcomes. But public choice economics offers up one underexplored way to think about the quality of responses: as driven by political incentives.Despite claims by economists such as Mariana Mazzucato that governments are forward ‐looking, there’s a good reason to suspect they will be ill ‐prepared when it c...

A physician ’s response to anti-Asian racism
“Wait, are you Chinese? I don’t want to get COVID.” First of all, I am Vietnamese, and second, not all Asians look alike. And third, what? Vietnam Must Be Pleased with the Biden Administration — for the Most Part
After four years of steadily strengthening U.S.-Vietnam security relations under the Trump administration, the presidential transition to Joe Biden naturally carries some measure of uncertainty for Hanoi. Early signs from the Biden administration, however, are extremely positive for Vietnam. (Source: The RAND Blog)

Grandparenting: Anticipating March 11
March 11th, 2020 — or was it March 12th, or a few days before or beyond that? Each of us has a date and time etched in our minds when we knew that the COVID-19 pandemic was upon us. Now, the anniversary of that date is fast approaching. What, if anything, do we do to mark it? And how do we convey our thoughts and feelings about this milestone to our grandchildren? Anyone who has reached grandparenthood has collected anniversaries along the way. There are anniversaries of joyful occasions, and ones that serve as painful reminders of loss. There are the personal anniversaries — the births and deaths of loved ones — and...

How Is Biden ’s Covid Relief Bill like the Patriot Act?
David BoazPresident Biden seems determined to pass his “American Rescue Plan” without any Republican votes. It’s $1.9 trillion or bust, he says, on top of the unprecedented $3 trillion coronavirus relief bill from March and another $900 billion in December, some of which still hasn’t been spent. In fact, Republicans don’t have the clout to sto p the bill. But the plan is also drawing some sharp criticism from non‐Republican sources. Two big articles in the Washington Post Thursday and Friday urged that the plan be pared back to presumably necessary measures, with other components to be considered through the...

Few Immigrants among Capitol Insurrectionists
Alex NowrastehAs of February 1, 2021, a  total of 217 people have been arrested or charged with participating in the January 6, 2021 Capitol insurrection. Many more people will be arrested and charged in the coming months, but it’s worth looking at the demographics of this group to better understand what happened.Newresearch by professors Robert A. Pape and Keven Ruby present the age, employment status, and other demographic characteristics of the mob that attacked the Capitol. However, Pape and Ruby left out one key demographic variable: nativity. How many of the rioters were foreign ‐born? To fill this gap, my int...
