Erupting In Birdsong
Mags and I have just gotten back from our very pleasant morning walk. Maggie was really strutting her stuff this morning - tail erect and head held high as she briskly walked beside me tethered to her leash. She's an undaunted little soul much like the unsinkable Molly Brown. It's also beautiful outside today with sixty degree temperatures - a perfect morning for a walk. Once again, the catbirds were calling with urgency for mates well before sunrise and the magical hour. This morning I purchased some pickled sausages, a Mountain Dew, a pint of milk for my afternoon bowl of cereal, and two large Slim Jim's for Maggie.I hop...

Subtle Signs of Mother’s Dementia
We all need to be circumspect of subtle changes in personality, balance, judgment, memory and anything else uncharacteristic in our friends and family. Be Proactive and we can be less Reactive. By Elaine C. Pereira Alzheimer's Reading Room Falling The recent article on the Alzheimer’s Reading Room, Problems with Balance, Walking, Falling Can Be an Early Sign of Dementia, started me reflecting on a series of falls my mother experienced as well as other soft signs of her decline, or not so soft when she fell to the floor. At four feet, eleven inches, my mom was definitely petite and slender. She maintain...

The Essential EMR Checklist for Psychiatry Practices
The Unique Requirements of Medical Documentation in Psychiatry & Psychiatry Electronic Medical Records Psychiatry and psychology hold somewhat unique requirements among the medical specialties in that the diagnosis itself cannot be visualized or examined in the same way as a healing surgical incision or a growing infant. The physical results of some psychiatric disorders, however, are demonstrable by physical symptoms. Anorexia, for instance, can be clearly identified by individuals untrained in medicine. Psychiatrists, psychologists and psychiatric nurses can also identify the mania of a bipolar diagnosis, the usual p...

The Subtle Art of Starting Over

I don’t know about you but I’m a sucker for a good beginning. The opening chapter of a book. A beautiful sunrise. The bride walking down the aisle. The father holding up his infant son.The 18-year old heading cross country on a road trip. It’s that fresh smell of a new car. That first day of spring feeling. It’s Monday, the first of the month and January 1st all rolled into one golden opportunity to create the world as you wish.A good beginning is like an unwrapped gift. It holds promise, hope and possibility.Of course, for every rosy-eyed beginning, there is another, far more ominous beginning. It’s the one that mak...

How I Quit Gambling
Projectile vomiting can be your friend. I never should have found myself inside casinos in the first place. As a former alcoholic, cigarette smoker, and drug abuser, taking up gambling does not, in retrospect, sound like a solid life plan. But in my addictive heyday, gambling was definitely a part of my life. I would go the casino, stand inside the entrance, gaze out across the dark, jangling world of the slot machine floor, populated by solitary figures seated on stools, busily drinking and smoking cigarettes, and mutter: “My kinda people.” And they were. Lurking out there were a significant number of fellow addict...

Music Video Recreates Experience of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (NSFW)
Spanish band Begun hired Borja V. Conde to create a music video for a track called “San Francisco.” But before the scheduled shoot Conde had a case of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, which he decided to take as inspiration for the new work and and share his experience with the viewer. Here him describing “San Francisco” and the slightly not-safe-for-work vid is below the fold:Repeated episodes of dizziness made my doctor decide that I was suffering from benign paroxysmal positional vertigo: a constant spinning sensation and sudden visual disturbances towards nearby moving objects. ‘San ...

The Antidepressant Era: the movie
No apologies here, this article (and videos) have been lifted straight from David Healy’s excellent website. It’s important that as many people as possible have the chance to read the piece and take time to watch the film. As far as the pharmaceutical industry is concerned, I can tell you from first hand experience that the industry still believes in its own hype… do more, feel better and live longer is Glaxo’s strapline and no one in that company thinks there’s even a hint of irony in that. Now for Dr Healy’s piece: The Antidepressant Era: the movie The Antidepressant Era was written i...
