EM Future
Recent thread posts reflect unemployed EM docs, surge in residency programs, rise in corporate medical groups, mid-level encroachment, etc that have real impacts on the specialty. There are various posters talking about the past exodus from EM, current exodus or exploring the options for future exodus. I couldn't help but think that EM should flip the paradigm, and not be a base specialty but instead revert to a fellowship of 1-3 years duration. Tap into the roots where IM/FM were the... Young ER doctors risk their lives on the pandemic ’s front lines. But they struggle to find jobs.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2021/01/04/er-doctors-covid-jobs/ Obviously, this makes the news because ER docs are on the COVID frontlines. I find their situation to be abhorrent and certainly worse than the oversupplied RadOnc issue. I post this here only because the oft-repeated argument of the "RadOnc Job Market is FINE" crowd is that "unemployment is low". They say that we shouldn't be pointing at things like inability to find jobs in certain... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

*PLEASE DO NOT QUOTE THIS MESSAGE* Hello, I'm a LM 70 CA ORM with a 3.6 cgpa/3.57 sgpa, graduated in 2016. I applied late last cycle (complete mid Sept - mid October) due to late MCAT (515, only took it once) and applied again this year (unfortunately complete early Sept - mid Oct due to family illness + unemployment + Covid delays). I applied to around 40-45 MD schools last cycle and this time 32 schools (cut out reaches and OOS schools which I had a lot of in my school list last cycle and... Long Problem....Please Help
Apologies for this very long post but I would like to hear some opinions on this please. *** Also can we please skip the pharmacy is saturated narrative? I understand that but its what I would like to do and i also have a family business in Pharmacy.*** So to start off, I'm a U.S citizen but currently lives in Egypt. I was going to study in the U.S but the pandemic and high unemployment really discouraged me from doing so. Now instead I'm joining and 0-6 program here in Egypt also offering... Secondary Application Time Line
I know the general rule is to get secondaries in within two weeks. Unfortunately, due to COVID I was unemployed from my main job for most of quarantine. However, since I had a part time, low wage job that I was still able to work a couple days a week, I didn't qualify for unemployment and my funds quickly ran low. I've thankfully been able to start my main job again, but I'm having to work crazy hours to pay for secondaries. At this point I have a large number of secondaries in my inbox that... Anyone plan on continuing collecting unemployment insurance in medical school?
I'm currently collecting $890 a week after being laid off from my CNA job due to COVID. Even after the extra $600 run out, I will still be collecting $290 a week for 6 months (and its possible congress could extend the $600 payment). My state also waived work search requirements until September 1st for now, and I forsee them extending them more into the future. My only problem is I have to answer the question am I available to work? I will be saying I am in school. I did collect... Advice on what to do re: jobs
Sort of in a dilemma right now. Just finished a PGY1 and currently unemployed BUT I got an offer for a specialty pharmacy (similar to retail, not closed door) for a fulltime, and I will be doing an interview for a FT hospital job (wont be in a few weeks, 50% chance). I LOVE specialty pharmacy so I dont mind working “retail” but the thought that I would be doing that after a residency sucks, and the fact that if I wanna go back to hospital, it’ll be harder later on without the recent... Established school vs diploma mill?
Hi, I'm trying to make a decision about which school to attend next fall. Yes, I have thought about my decision. Yes, I know pharmacy is flooded. I am accepted to two schools. One is an established school and one is a diploma mill type school. I've spoken to students and grads from both schools and the consensus seems to be that you CAN get jobs/residencies from both schools and you can also end up unemployed from both (as the constant topic of this forum is). The less respected school is... Established school vs diploma mill? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Fresh grad: got a job in big pharma, plus working towards another degree, should i bother getting licensed as a pharmacist at all??
Recently got an industry job offer at a big pharma (starts with a G), paying low six-figure salary, as a super fresh PharmD grad. I am very excited and happy for sure, especially during a national crisis with ever increasing ~20% unemployment rate (could very well hit 30% if lock-down continues for another month or two, urghhhhhhh). I will be working towards another masters degree (cs/data science related) at a top school in my spare time, which is very likely fully reimbursed by my employer... Opening a new “Dental Practice” days are numbered.
A lot of people in the dental industry are planning a slow down for dental services this year and in 2021. This is not a good news for most dentists who want to build a practice from scratch in the next couple of years: A. The covid19 employment factor: A large number of dentists are currently unemployed and will continue to be unemployed if their employers can’t keep them busy in the coming months, specially for elective cases. A vaccine will eventually help bring this prolonged... Opening a new “Dental Practice” days are numbered. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Volunteering during COVID?
Hello all, I'm wondering what people are doing for volunteering during this pandemic? Currently I'm unemployed (because of COVID), I'm not taking any classes and I'm pretty much sitting at home doing nothing. The only thing I'm doing is volunteering for a sexual assault hotline (which I've been doing for over a year now). I feel like I should be doing something to help with all of my free time and truthfully I'm worried that admissions committees might look on it very negatively if I don't...
