IJERPH, Vol. 21, Pages 499: Impacts of Working Hours, Wages, and Regular Employment Opportunity on Suicide Mortalities of Employed and Unemployed Individuals before and during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Japan
Okada Standardized suicide mortality rates per 100,000 population (SMRs) in Japan consistently decreased from 2009–2019, but these decreasing trends were reversed to increase in 2020. To clarify the mechanisms of recent increasing suicide in Japan, temporal fluctuations of SMRs disaggregated by sex and employment status (employed and unemployed individuals) and labor indices such as working hours, wages, and regular employment opportunity index (REO) from January 2012 to June 2023 were analyzed using interrupted time-series analysis. Additionally, temporal causalities from labor indices to SMRs were analy...

Understanding the financial cost of cancer clinical trial participation
ConclusionCancer clinical trial-related financial hardship, most often stemming from travel expenses, affected almost half of trial-enrolled patients. Interventions are needed to reduce adverse financial participation effects and potentially improve cancer clinical trial participation. (Source: Cancer Medicine)

Self-Perceived Interpersonal Problems Among Long-Term Unemployed Individuals, and Vocational Rehabilitation Programs (In)ability to Change Them
ConclusionThese results are relevant as they may inform interventions targeted this population aimed at increasing employability and/or individual well-being. Importantly, the findings may be viewed as a reflection of both social and individual processes. Long-term unemployed individuals ’ tendency to feel insufficiently engaged may reflect difficulty with keeping up with a job market in constant change. Association between inflammatory potential of diet and anthropometric indicators of adiposity among a sample of Turkish university
This study aims to investigate the relationship between the dietary inflammatory index (DII) and anthropometric indicators of adiposity among Turkish adults. The study sample consisted of 833 young adults (mean age = 23 ± 5.2 years). The inflammatory potential of the diet was evaluated with a DII. Data on dietary intake were collected by a single 24-h dietary recall, and DII was estimated from 25 dietary components. Also, the Mediterranean diet (Med-Diet) adherence screener was applied using the 14-item assessment tool. The proinflammatory diet was statistically associated with young (p < 0.001), singles (p < 0....

Socioeconomic determinants of COVID-19 vaccine acceptance
AbstractThe aim of the paper is to evaluate the relative importance of the set of socioeconomic characteristics of population on collective decision on COVID-19 vaccine acceptance. We apply cross-section OLS methods to the municipal-level non-survey data for 145 municipalities in Serbia, on the COVID-19 vaccination rate and socioeconomic characteristics of the population, to evaluate the determinants of cross-municipal variation in vaccine uptake decision. Using the estimated coefficients from the OLS regressions, we apply the standardized beta method to evaluate the relative importance of each factor. Vaccine acceptance i...

Prevalence, perinatal outcomes and factors associated with neonatal sepsis in Nigeria
CONCLUSIONS: Neonatal sepsis remains a critical challenge in neonatal care, underscored by its high prevalence and mortality rate. The identification of maternal and neonatal risk factors underscores the importance of improved access to education and employment for women and targeted interventions in antenatal and intrapartum care.PMID:38602158 | DOI:10.1111/1471-0528.17824 (Source: BJOG : An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology)

Trends and regional distribution in health-related quality of life across sex and employment status: A repeated population-based cross-sectional study
CONCLUSIONS: This study suggested that the prevalence of low HRQoL levels among unemployed males was consistently high at the annual trend and regional levels. Further research considering comprehensive health determinants and multi-dimensional public health interventions is required to prevent the transition from unemployment to the deterioration of HRQoL.PMID:38604179 | DOI:10.1093/joccuh/uiae017 (Source: Journal of Occupational Health)

The Measurement of Precarious Work and Market Conditions: Insights from the COVID-19 Disruption on Sample Selection
Work Occup. 2023 Feb;50(1):22-59. doi: 10.1177/07308884221127636.ABSTRACTThe precarious work construct combines employment instability and employment-contingent outcomes. Yet, I argue that confining the scope of the investigation to employed individuals creates a sample selection that disguises the heterogeneous nature of employment instability. The COVID-19 skyrocketing unemployment rate provides both a compelling motivation and a unique opportunity to revisit the construct of precarious work. Using pre-COVID and COVID-19 era data of the working-age population in Israel, the results demonstrate that by pushing less stable...
