Postoperative Bowel Obstruction as a Rare Complication of an Abdominal Drain
Ann Ital Chir. 2024;95(2):132-135. doi: 10.62713/aic.3294.ABSTRACTAlthough routine intra-abdominal drain insertion following surgery represents a common practice worldwide, its utility has been questioned during the last decades. Several comparative studies have failed to document significant benefits from routine draining, and drain insertion has been correlated with various complications as well. Drain-related complications include, but are not limited, to infection, bleeding, and tissue erosion. Herein, we present the case of a 32-year-old patient with perforated peptic ulcer and purulent peritonitis, whose postoperativ...

Intragastric Balloon as a Noninvasive Method for Obesity Treatment: A Single-Center Retrospective Study
CONCLUSIONS: Balloon therapy typically helps patients lose 10% of body weight. Intragastric balloons are effective when used as weight loss tools, but are ineffective at maintaining weight loss. An intragastric device placed for 6 months may also be expected to help the patients develop better eating habits; however, we did not encounter this lifestyle change in our series.PMID:38684492 | DOI:10.62713/aic.3376 (Source: Annali Italiani di Chirurgia)

The Relationship of Microsatellite Instability with BRAF and p53 Mutations and Histopathological Parameters in Colorectal Adenocarcinoma
CONCLUSION: In colorectal adenocarcinoma, MSI and BRAF mutation are associated with parameters, indicating the host immune response and prognostic histopathological parameters, including tumor size and histological grade. The evaluation of MSI status and BRAF mutation can be particularly informative for predicting the prognosis and guiding the treatment management in poorly differentiated colorectal adenocarcinoma. Understanding the mechanisms of molecular carcinogenesis in colorectal carcinoma and organizing treatment algorithms based on molecular foundations will increase the success of the treatment.PMID:38684491 | DOI:...

Treatment Options and the Management of Complications in Hydatid Cysts of the Liver in Endemic Regions
CONCLUSION: Surgical treatment should represent the standard procedure since it is safe and effective, ensures complete elimination of the parasite, involves no intraoperative shedding, preserves healthy tissues, and minimizes the risk of long-term recurrence and cavity-related complications.PMID:38684490 | DOI:10.62713/aic.3379 (Source: Annali Italiani di Chirurgia)

Proposal of a classification of cannulation damage in vascular access grafts based on clinical, ultrasound, and microscopic observations
CONCLUSION: Cannulation damage alone does not solely account for AVG failure. It results from a biological host-mediated process that promotes the growth of intimal hyperplasia at the cannulation sites. This process is not clinically significant within the initial 2 years after AVG creation.PMID:38679815 | DOI:10.1177/11297298241248263 (Source: The Journal of Vascular Access)

The association between vascular access satisfaction and all-cause mortality in maintenance hemodialysis patients
J Vasc Access. 2024 Apr 29:11297298241244483. doi: 10.1177/11297298241244483. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: The mortality is significantly higher in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) than in the general population. It is well-known that vascular access (VA) is critical for MHD patients. But the association between VA satisfaction and all-cause mortality in MHD patients is still not clear. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between VA satisfaction and all-cause mortality in MHD patients with a 30-month follow-up.METHODS: Two hundred twenty-nine MHD patients in two dialysis cen...

Cohort study on incidence of new-onset type 2 diabetes in patients after bariatric surgery and matched controls
CONCLUSION: Metabolic bariatric surgery was associated with a reduced risk of new-onset type 2 diabetes in men and women and in all age groups. The greatest benefit was observed in individuals of low socioeconomic status.PMID:38682425 | DOI:10.1093/bjs/znae105 (Source: The British Journal of Surgery)

"Emergency Room Incision and Drainage of Perirectal Abscess is Equivalent to Incision and Drainage in the Operating Room"
In this study, for patients presenting to the ED, bedside drainage was found to be an adequate management strategy to achieve complete drainage without a significant increase in the rate of complications when compared to operative drainage.PMID:38684322 | DOI:10.1177/00031348241248785 (Source: The American Surgeon)

Open Versus Minimally Invasive Emergent Colectomy for Diverticulitis
DISCUSSION: Compared to planned open colectomy, MIS resection was associated with improved clinical and financial outcomes, even in cases of CTO. Our findings suggest that whenever possible, MIS should be attempted first in emergent colectomy for diverticulitis. Nevertheless, future prospective studies are likely needed to further elucidate specific patient and clinical factors.PMID:38682325 | DOI:10.1177/00031348241248701 (Source: The American Surgeon)

Level III Trauma Centers Achieve Comparable Outcomes in Blunt Splenic Injury as Level I Centers
CONCLUSION: Level III centers effectively managed BSI achieving comparable outcomes to the level 1 center. Transfers commonly occurred in pediatric and multisystem trauma patients, though high-grade splenic injuries were not predictive of transfer. High-grade BSI can be safely managed at level III centers without need for transfer.PMID:38679964 | DOI:10.1177/00031348241241729 (Source: The American Surgeon)

A Standardized Post-gastrostomy Feeding Protocol for Pediatric Patients Reduces Time to Postoperative Goal Feeding Volume
DISCUSSION: These findings demonstrate that our accelerated post-gastrostomy feeding protocol was effective in achieving goal enteral nutrition earlier without increasing postoperative adverse outcomes. This protocol may be used by other centers to safely expedite time to goal enteral feeds in children postoperatively.PMID:38684325 | DOI:10.1177/00031348241248789 (Source: The American Surgeon)
