The Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study: An Interim Preliminary First Look at Tobacco Use From the Baseline Wave
This presentation is an encore of the PATH Study Plenary presented at SRNT 2015 in Philadelphia on Thursday, February 26th. In addition to describing the design, methods, and progress of the PATH Study, this presentation will provide a first glimpse at the demographic and tobacco use profiles of the adults and youth in the PATH Study from an interim, partial dataset of those enrolled from baseline until July 22, 2014. The current timeline for the PATH Study and the dissemination of baseline data will also be discussed. Following the presentation, there will be time for questions and discussion.Air date: 3/25/2015 2:00:00...

Neural Predictors of Health Behavior Change
BSSR Lecture Series As part of the BSSR Lecture Series organized by the National Institutes of Health Office of Behavioral Health and Social Sciences, Dr. Emily Falk’s lecture on January 9 will present recent work leveraging neural activity in brain systems linked to self-related processing and value to predict real-world, health-relevant behavior change in the context of smoking cessation and increasing physical activity. She will present data predicting individual changes in health behaviors across time, as well as population level responses to different groups of health messages and campaigns. There will also be discu...

How Do We Motivate Long-Term Behavior Change to Prevent Cancer?
Annual Advances in Cancer Prevention Lecture Dr. John Pierce is a professor in the Department of Family and Prevention Medicine at the University of California, San Diego and Director of Population Science at Moores Cancer Center. He helped initiate the world's first statewide tobacco control program in Australia in the early 1980s. He also started the Women's Healthy Living and Eating Project which tested the role of plant-based dietary patterns in preventing recurrence among breast cancer survivors. Dr. Pierce has won numerous awards for his work. The title of his lecture is: How do we motivate long-term behavior c...

Innovation in Methods and Measures of Historical Trauma and Microaggression Distress
Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Series American Indians and Alaska Natives have endured a succession of historically traumatic assaults and discriminatory events over time against their land, communities, families, and persons. Indigenous community discourse suggests that historical trauma combined with contemporary microaggressions distress can potentially become embodied in health outcomes and health-risk behaviors, particularly substance-use-related risk. Dr. Walters’s presentation will describe how historical trauma and microaggressions impact indigenous embodiment of health in a six-site national study of 447 gay, le...

Smoking, Obesity, and US Longevity
Seventh Annual Matilda White Riley Lecture in the Behavioral and Social Sciences Since 1960, the mortality profiles of industrialized countries have been dominated by the chronic diseases of adulthood. The intensity of these diseases reflects many factors, including scientific understanding of disease etiology, access to and performance of health care systems, levels of education and income, and individual behaviors affecting health. This paper examines mortality levels in the United States and other industrialized countries since 1960 and considers the extent to which smoking and obesity are contributors to trends, inter...

New Technologies and Behavior Change Interventions: What Can They Do for Each Other?
Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Lecture Series New mHealth technologies are proliferating at an astonishing rate, with many new tools being harnessed for behavior change interventions. Because they are inexpensive, transportable, and have broad (and growing) penetration, mHealth tools (e.g., smartphone apps, text messaging, accelerometers/pedometers) have the potential to overcome access barriers and extend the reach of behavioral interventions to the large population that may benefit. The co-emergence of new mHealth tools and new, efficient methodologies for intervention development creates an opportunity to ...

Nanotechnology: Multifunctional Smart Nanoparticles Measure Previously Invisible Diagnostic Analytes
Proteomics Interest Group A critical need within the biomedical research sector is the identification and reliable clinical measurement of novel low abundance biomarkers that are predictive of early stage diseases such as cancer, or that correlate with therapeutic outcome or toxicity. Unresolved challenges in the biomarker discovery and measurement field are 1) Early disease biomarkers exist in body fluids at a concentration below the detection limit of biomarker discovery and measurement platforms, 2) Proteins and peptides are masked by billion fold excess quantities of resident proteins such as immunoglobulin and albumi...

Bridging the Gap Between What Health Professionals Should Do To Help Smokers Quit and What They Actually Do: What Is the Role of Public Health Workers and the NIH?
Medicine: Mind the Gap is a lecture series that explores issues at the intersection of research, evidence, and clinical practice—areas in which conventional wisdom may be contradicted by recent evidence. From the role of advocacy organizations in medical research and policy, to off-label drug use, to the effectiveness of continuing medical education, the seminar series will aim to engage the NIH community in thought-provoking discussions to challenge what we think we know and to think critically about our role in today’s research environment. For more information go to http://prevention.nih.gov/mindthegap/schroeder.aspx...
