miRNA contributes to neuropathic pains
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Sep 18:126893. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126893. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNeuropathic pain (NP) is a kind of chronic pain caused by direct injury to the peripheral or central nervous system (CNS). microRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding RNAs that mostly interact with the 3 untranslated region of messenger RNAs (mRNAs) to regulate the expression of multiple genes. NP is characterized by changes in the expression of receptors and mediators, and there is evidence that miRNAs may contribute to some of these alterations. In this review, we aimed to fully comprehend the connection between NP and ...

Oil structuring from porous starch to powdered oil: Role of multi-scale structure in the oil adsorption and distribution
This study compared the role of multi-scale structure of porous starch (PS) prepared by normal and waxy maize starch in the oil adsorption. Waxy maize porous starch exhibited higher oil adsorption capacity (32.43 %-98.71 %) and more oil distributed on the surface of granules than normal maize porous starch, resulting from the more pores, larger specific surface area (1.01-1.53 m2/g), and pore size (8.45-9.32 nm). The enzymolysis time of native starch dominated oil distribution, leading to different granule adhesion and aggregation state. Pearson correlation analysis further showed oil adsorption capacity was negatively cor...

Manganese-doped albumin-gelatin composite nanogel loaded with berberine applied to the treatment of gouty arthritis in rats via a SPARC-dependent mechanism
In this study, manganese-doped albumin-gelatin composite nanogels (MAGN) were prepared and used to load berberine (Ber) for the treatment of gouty arthritis (GA). The nanodrug delivery system (Ber-MAGN) can target inflammatory joints due to the intrinsic high affinity of albumin for SPARC, which is overexpressed at the inflammatory site of GA. Characterization of the pharmaceutical properties in vitro showed that Ber-MAGN had good dispersion, and the particle size was 121 ± 10.7 nm. The sustained release effect significantly improved the bioavailability of berberine. In vitro and in vivo experimental results showed that B...

Improved miscibility and toughness of biological poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate)/poly(lactic acid) blends via melt-blending-induced thermal degradation
This study aimed to improve the miscibility of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate) (P34HB) and PLA by lowering their molecular weights via a melt-blending-induced thermal degradation during mechanical mixing to form m-P34HB/PLA blends. The molecular weight of the P34HB was significantly reduced after blending, thereby improving the miscibility of the blends, as evidenced by the shift of glass transition temperatures. Also, simulation based on Flory-Huggins theory demonstrated increased miscibility with decreasing molecular weight of the polymers. Moreover, the thermal gravimetric analysis revealed that the PLA pro...

Effects of carboxymethyl cellulose fiber formations with chitosan incorporation via coating and mixing processes
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Sep 18:126971. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126971. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo date, the utilization of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) fibers are only restricted to weak mechanical application such as wound dressing. Physically, CMC has a weak mechanical strength due to the high hydrophilicity trait. However, this flaw was saved by the extensive number of reactive functional groups, allowing this macromolecule to form linkages with chitosan to ensure its versatility. This work successfully fabricated CMC-chitosan fiber via dissolution, crosslinking, dry-jet wet-spinning extrusion, and coagula...
