Measuring continuity of care for diabetes: which visits to include?
CONCLUSIONS: Continuity values differed substantially depending on which provider specialties were included. The importance of this variation is uncertain, as continuity was weakly associated with ED visits using each of the measures.PMID:37729533 | DOI:10.37765/ajmc.2023.89431

Healthcare IT Regulations – What Needs to Be Added and What Needs to Be Removed
There are a lot of rules and regulations in place in the world of healthcare. These are put into place in order to protect patients and organizations. However, the world of healthcare is constantly changing and evolving as we come up with new ideas and solutions. Have the regulations done the same though? Or are there areas that are missing regulations? Or are there areas in healthcare where past regulations are now too restrictive and are holding us back? In search of answers to these questions, we reached out to our incredibly beautiful Healthcare IT Today Community to see what areas they would add, remove, or update re...

Tele-Neuropsychology: From Science to Policy to Practice
CONCLUSIONS: More studies of the reliability and validity of in-home tele-np-t using randomization methodology are necessary to support inclusion of tele-np-t codes on the CMS and CPT telehealth lists, and subsequently, the integration and delivery of in-home tele-np-t services across providers and institutions. These actions are needed to maintain equitable reimbursement of in-home tele-np-t services and address the widespread disparities in healthcare access.PMID:37715508 | DOI:10.1093/arclin/acad066

Substance Use Among Patients With Incident Crohn's Disease in the United States, 2010 to 2019: A Medicaid Observational Study
CONCLUSION: Among Medicaid enrollees with incident CD, alcohol and opioid use were more frequent than previously published estimates for the general US population (6% and 4%, respectively, in 2019). Consequently, medical communities must be more aware of substance use by patients with CD to provide quality patient-centered care.PMID:37712010 | PMC:PMC10500958 | DOI:10.1016/j.gastha.2023.03.019

Long-term exposure to summer specific humidity and cardiovascular disease hospitalizations in the US Medicare population
CONCLUSION: Long-term exposure to higher summer average specific humidity and specific humidity variability were positively associated with CVD hospitalization. As global warming could increase humidity levels, our findings are important to assess potential health impacts of climate change.PMID:37683506 | DOI:10.1016/j.envint.2023.108182

J Hand Surg Am. 2023 Sep 5:S0363-5023(23)00411-2. doi: 10.1016/j.jhsa.2023.07.019. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn 2020, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services issued a historic rule on price transparency that aimed to better inform Americans about their health care costs by requiring hospitals to publicly provide pricing information on their items and services. In this review article, we describe the current gaps in transparency that persist after the implementation of the rule, from incomplete pricing files to noncompliance despite the issuance of monetary penalties by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Servi...

Racial and Ethnic Inequities in Development of Type 2 Diabetes After Gestational Diabetes Mellitus
CONCLUSION: Population-based racial and ethnic inequities are substantial in type 2 diabetes after GDM. Characteristics at the time of delivery partially explain disparities, creating an opportunity to intervene on life-course cardiometabolic inequities, whereas weak associations of common social or structural measures and BMI in Black, Hispanic and South and Southeast Asian individuals demonstrate the need for greater understanding of how structural racism influences postpartum cardiometabolic risk in these groups.PMID:37678923 | DOI:10.1097/AOG.0000000000005324

Association Among Race, Ethnicity, Insurance Type, and Postpartum Permanent Contraception Fulfillment
CONCLUSION: In unadjusted models, we find marked racial disparities in fulfillment of permanent contraception. Controlling for individual- and facility-level factors eliminated associations among race, ethnicity, insurance type, and fulfillment, likely because covariates are mediators on the pathway between racism and fulfillment.PMID:37678912 | DOI:10.1097/AOG.0000000000005328
