A protein that disrupts cells ’ energy centers may be a culprit in chronic fatigue syndrome
People living with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) struggle not only with extreme exhaustion and the cognitive problems known as brain fog, but with a profound lack of information about what causes their symptoms and how to treat them. Scientists have yet to pin down the biology underlying the condition, which affects up to 2.5 million people in the United States alone, according to some estimates. Now, researchers have identified a protein that’s present at unusually high levels in the muscles of people with ME/CFS and that disrupts cells’ ability to generate energy. The fi...

Evaluating SARS-CoV-2 Saliva and Dried Blood Spot Surveillance Strategies in a Congregate Population
Emerg Infect Dis. 2023 Sep;29(9):1925-1928. doi: 10.3201/eid2909.230417. Epub 2023 Aug 14.ABSTRACTThe optimal approach to COVID-19 surveillance in congregate populations remains unclear. Our study at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, USA, assessed the concordance of antibody prevalence in longitudinally collected dried blood spots and saliva in a setting of frequent PCR-based testing. Our findings highlight the utility of salivary-based surveillance.PMID:37579513 | DOI:10.3201/eid2909.230417

Spotlighting the Imbalance: Gender Disparities Among Speakers and Awardees at Pediatric Emergency Medicine Conferences
CONCLUSIONS: As compared to NCE, women are underrepresented as speakers at APEMA, but not at SOEM. Abstract presenters are more likely to be women as compared to invited speakers. While awards appear equally distributed, recipients do not mirror the proportion of women in PEM. Conference organizers and leaders in PEM should ensure gender equity in national recognition.PMID:37550843 | DOI:10.1111/acem.14786

Incidence and associated factors of congenital syphilis at a tertiary care center in Thailand
CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of congenital syphilis in our institution was high. Factors associated with congenital syphilis were inadequate treatment of maternal syphilis and preterm birth. Improvement of prenatal care should be emphasized.PMID:37551201 | PMC:PMC10405329 | DOI:10.2478/abm-2023-0039
