Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Aug 1. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-28852-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA nanocomposite photocatalyst consisting of titanium dioxide (TiO2) supported on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) has been successfully prepared and used for the treatment of wastewater contaminated with tetracycline (TC), a recalcitrant antibiotic pollutant. The TiO2/MCNT composites were prepared by a simple evaporation-drying method. The properties of MWCNT/TiO2 were optimized by dispersing different amounts of TiO2 onto MWCNT. The structural and optical characteristics of the nano-engineered photocatalyst composit...

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Aug 1. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-28919-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn recent years, wastewater treatment to remove tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) has received much attention in water treatment problems. ZIF-67/C3N4 composite adsorbent, a nanosheet structured material stacked with MOFs, was prepared by in situ growth method, which has high adsorption activity for tetracycline hydrochloride in wastewater. Comparing the effect of monomeric and composite adsorbents, Z6C2 had the best adsorption effect (206 mg·g-1), which was 77.6% higher than that of ZIF-67 (116 mg·g-1) and 10.8 times hi...

Whole genome sequencing of Bacillus anthracis isolated from animal in the 1960s, Brazil, belonging to the South America subclade
Comp Immunol Microbiol Infect Dis. 2023 Jul 25;100:102027. doi: 10.1016/j.cimid.2023.102027. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBacillus anthracis causes anthrax disease and can affect humans and other animals. This zoonotic disease has an impact on the economic and health aspects. B. anthracis population is divided into three major clades: A (with worldwide distribution), B, and C (restricted to specific regions). Anthrax is most common in agricultural regions of central and southwestern Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, Southern and Eastern Europe, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Here, we sequenced by short and long rea...

Preparation of an electrochemical sensor utilizing graphene-like biochar for the detection of tetracycline
This study reports the development of a novel electrochemical sensor from waste peanut shell for the quick detection of TC in water. Raman and TEM lattice mapping analyses confirmed the successful preparation of graphene -like biochar from waste peanut shells (PSs) via hydrothermal and pyrolysis processes. An electrochemical sensor, PS@glassy carbon electrode (PS@GCE), was then developed by coating the prepared graphene-like biochar on the surface of a glass electrode to enhance its conductivity. The feasibility of using this sensor for the detection of TC in the aqueous system was investigated. The PS@GCE sensor exhibited...

Broad-bandgap porous graphitic carbon nitride with nitrogen vacancies and oxygen doping for efficient visible-light photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics
Environ Pollut. 2023 Jul 26:122268. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2023.122268. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEffective degradation methods are required to address the issue of antibiotics as organic pollutants in water resources. Herein, a two-stage thermal treatment method was used to prepare porous graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) modified with nitrogen vacancies and oxygen doping at the N-(C)3 position and deep in the g-C3N4 framework. Compared with bulk g-C3N4 (BCN) (7 ± 1 m2/g), the modified sample (RCN-2h) possesses a larger specific surface area (224 ± 1 m2/g), a larger bandgap (by 0.19 eV), and a mid-gap state. In addit...

Oxidative magnetization of biochar at relatively low pyrolysis temperature for efficient removal of different types of pollutants
Bioresour Technol. 2023 Jul 26:129572. doi: 10.1016/j.biortech.2023.129572. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA novel oxidative magnetization, involving phosphomolybdic acid and Fe(NO3)3 co-promoted pyrolysis, was established to manufacture highly adsorptive magnetic biochars for adsorbing aqueous tetracycline, methylene blue, and Cr6+. The modification of phosphomolybdic acid greatly boosted the formation of γ-Fe2O3 and oxygen containing groups with enhancement of specific surface area and pore volume at 400 °C. Importantly, γ-Fe2O3 was stably fixed on surface in quasi-nanoscale. The oxidized magnetic biochar displayed 631...

Efficient and effective immobilization of tetracycline and copper from waste water by zero-valent iron fabricated hydrochar derived from walnut peel
Bioresour Technol. 2023 Jul 25:129557. doi: 10.1016/j.biortech.2023.129557. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAntibiotics and heavy metals often co-exist as non-point-source contaminants in wastewater and their quite contrary physiochemical properties make their co-removal processes challenging. In this work, a bifunctional zero-valent iron-modified hydrochar derived from walnut peel (MWPHC) was synthesized, which was then applied for the simultaneous removal of tetracycline (TC) and Cu(II) from wastewater. Based on the characterizations, Fe0 species were successfully distributed on the surface of the walnut peel substrates. T...

Enhanced conversion of superoxide radical to singlet oxygen in peroxymonosulfate activation by metal-organic frameworks derived heteroatoms dual-doped porous carbon catalyst
In this study, metal-organic frameworks were utilized as precursors to synthesize P, N dual-doped carbon material (PNC), which was employed to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). The results demonstrated a 90.2% removal efficiency of total organic carbon within 60 min. The significant increase of surface defects on the nitrogen self-doped porous carbon materials anchored with phosphorus promoted the conversion of superoxide radical to singlet oxygen during PMS activation, which was identified as the key active species of PNC/PMS system. Additionally, the enhanced direct...

Cobalt doped nitrogen-vacancies-rich C < sub > 3 < /sub > N < sub > 5 < /sub > with optimizing local electron distribution boosts peroxymonsulfate activation for tetracycline degradation: Multiple electron transfer mechanisms
In this study, Cobalt (Co) doped nitrogen-vacancies-rich C3N5 photocatalysts (Co/Nv-C3N5) were designed to activate PMS for tetracycline removal. The photo-chemical oxidation system displayed superior advantage, in which the observed rate constant of tetracycline degradation (0.1488 min-1) was 10.86 and 1.82 times higher than that of photo-oxidation and chemical-oxidation systems. Density functional theory calculation results verified the reconstruction of local charge distribution during PMS activation, indicating Co doping and nitrogen-vacancy engineering not only promoted photoelectrons capture, but also boosted electro...
