Autophagy regulates inflammation in intracerebral hemorrhage: Enemy or friend?
In conclusion, the mutual regulation of autophagy and inflammation in ICH is worth exploring. The control of inflammation by autophagy will hopefully prove to be an essential treatment target for ICH.PMID:36726453 | PMC:PMC9884704 | DOI:10.3389/fncel.2022.1036313

Vitamin D intake and all-cause and cause-specific mortality in Japanese men and women: the Japan Public Health Center-based prospective study
Eur J Epidemiol. 2023 Jan 31. doi: 10.1007/s10654-023-00968-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWhile higher circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations have been reported to be associated with decreased risk of all-cause mortality, evidence on dietary vitamin D intake is limited and inconsistent. We investigated whether vitamin D intake is associated with all-cause and cause-specific mortality among Japanese adults. Participants were 42,992 men and 50,693 women who responded to the second survey of the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study (1995-1998) and who were followed up for mortality through 2018. Dieta...

Recognizing the True Value of Testosterone Therapy in Health Care
Androg Clin Res Ther. 2022 Dec 28;3(1):217-223. doi: 10.1089/andro.2022.0021. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTThere has been little recognition within the medical community of the health impact of testosterone (T) deficiency (TD), also known as hypogonadism, and the substantial benefits of testosterone therapy (TTh) on health and quality of life despite high-level clinical evidence. In a roundtable symposium, investigators summarized the contemporary evidence in several key clinical areas. TD negatively impacts human health and quality of life and is associated with increased mortality. Several studies have demonstrated that TTh ...

High cholesterol levels change the association of biomarkers of neurodegenerative diseases with dementia risk: Findings from a population-based cohort
This study assessed whether in a population with comorbidity of neurodegenerative and cerebrovascular disease (mixed pathology) the association of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), neurofilament light chain (NfL), and phosphorylated tau181 (p-tau181) with dementia risk varied depending on levels of total cholesterol and apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 genotype.METHODS: Plasma biomarkers were measured using Simoa technology in 768 participants of a nested case-control study embedded within an ongoing population-based cohort. Logistic and spline regression models, and receiver operating characteristic curves were calculate...

Dietary inflammatory index and cardiovascular disease risk in Hispanic women from the Women's Health Initiative
CONCLUSION: Among postmenopausal Hispanic women with overweight, greater adherence to pro-inflammatory diets was associated with higher risk of CVD. Additional research is needed to understand how to promote long-term heart-healthy dietary habits to reduce inflammation and prevent CVD in at-risk Hispanic women.PMID:36631866 | DOI:10.1186/s12937-023-00838-9

A view of care pathways approved by Italian Regions, to face the challenge of the community-based healthcare: a quali-quantitative analysis of the Pdta Net database.
CONCLUSIONS: The high number of CPs approved in Italy confirms an increasing interest of the healthcare institutions. The collected CPs show an extreme variety of titles, text structures and disease choices. Given the absence of an institutional observatory and of devotees of shared and harmonized CPs, annually Pdta Net makes available an updated and complete overview of these governance tools, which are essential for the upcoming changes of the Italian national health service.PMID:36573531 | DOI:10.1701/3939.39228

Identification of ligustrazine-based analogs of piperlongumine as potential anti-ischemic stroke agents
Fitoterapia. 2022 Dec 20:105398. doi: 10.1016/j.fitote.2022.105398. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPiper longum has a specific aroma and spicy taste. In addition to edible value, current studies have shown that piper longum also has pharmacological activities such as anti-platelet aggregation, anti-inflammation, anti-cancer, anti-diabetes and anti-depression. Piperlongumine is an alkaloid isolated from Piper longum. Based on our previous studies, four Piperlongumine analogs were synthesized, and their anti-platelet aggregation activities were evaluated. Among them, compound 8 has the strongest anti-platelet aggregation acti...

Comparative Effectiveness and Safety of Direct Oral Anticoagulants Versus Warfarin Among Adults With Cancer and Atrial Fibrillation
CONCLUSIONS: Older adults with cancer and atrial fibrillation exposed to DOACs had similar risks of stroke and systemic embolism and major bleeding as those exposed to warfarin. Relative to warfarin, DOAC use was associated with a similar risk of cardiovascular death and a lower risk of all-cause death.PMID:36453260 | DOI:10.1161/CIRCOUTCOMES.122.008951

Bioinformatic analysis and clinical diagnostic value of hsa_circ_0004099 in acute ischemic stroke
This study investigates the expression and effect of hsa_circ_0004099 in acute ischemic stroke (AIS). We conducted a case-controlled study that included 40 patients with AIS within 24 hours and 40 healthy subjects during the same period as a control group. Differentially expressed circular RNAs (circRNAs) were obtained using GEO2R, and the expression of hsa_circ_0004099 was verified using RT-PCR. Correlation analysis of the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) disease severity score and ischemic time with hsa_circ_0004099 expression levels was also performed. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve ...

Assessment of National Program for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, CVD and Stroke (NPCDCS): An observational study in rural Jaipur, Rajasthan
CONCLUSION: The study concludes that the implementation of NPCDCS program activities is not in synch with the health staff awareness level. IEC activities were deficient and no work was done for adoption of behavioural change and healthy lifestyle. Actual cases of hypertension were more while cases of diabetes were less than the reported cases found on cross-check survey.PMID:36387714 | PMC:PMC9648218 | DOI:10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_2281_21

Glutathione: A Samsonian life-sustaining small molecule that protects against oxidative stress, ageing and damaging inflammation
Front Nutr. 2022 Nov 1;9:1007816. doi: 10.3389/fnut.2022.1007816. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTMany local and systemic diseases especially diseases that are leading causes of death globally like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, atherosclerosis with ischemic heart disease and stroke, cancer and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causing coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19), involve both, (1) oxidative stress with excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that lower glutathione (GSH) levels, and (2) inflammation. The GSH tripeptide (γ- L-glutamyl-L-cysteinyl-glycine), the most abundant w...
