Implementing federal food service guidelines in federal and private worksite cafeterias in the United States leads to improved health outcomes and is cost saving
AbstractPoor diet increases cardiometabolic disease risk, yet the impact of food service guidelines on employee health and its cost effectiveness is poorly understood. Federal food service guidelines (FFSG) aim to provide United States (U.S.) government employees with healthier food options. Using microsimulation modeling, we estimated changes in the incidence of cardiometabolic disease, related mortality, and the cost effectiveness of implementing FFSG in nationally representative model populations of government and private company employees across 5 years and lifetime. We based estimates on changes in workplace intake of...

Estonia: Health System Review.
Authors: Habicht T, Reinap M, Kasekamp K, Sikkut R, Aaben L, van Ginneken E Abstract This analysis of the Estonian health system reviews recent developments in organization and governance, health financing, health care provision, health reforms and health system performance. In 2017, the Estonian government took the historic step of expanding the revenue base of the health system, which has been a longstanding challenge. However, in terms of percentage of GDP it remains a small increase and long-term financial sustainability could still pose a problem. The impact of global budgeting on treatment intensity and outcomes
Abstract This paper investigates the effects of global budgets on the amount of resources devoted to cardio-cerebrovascular disease patients by hospitals of different ownership types and these patients’ outcomes. Theoretical models predict that hospitals have financial incentives to increase the quantity of treatments applied to patients. This is especially true for for-profit hospitals. If that’s the case, it is important to examine whether the increase in treatment quantity is translated into better treatment outcomes. Our analyses take advantage of the National Health Insurance of Taiwan’s implementation...

Feeding the Problem, Seeking a Solution: India's Nutrition and Health Paradox
This essay is a description of the apparent cross-purposes at which certain limbs of the Indian government, specifically the Public Distribution System (PDS) and the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke (NPDCS), seem to be functioning: Some of the workings of the PDS contribute to poor health and non-communicable diseases, while the NPDCS endeavours to control non-communicable diseases. The lacunae and setbacks in public health engendered by the non-convergence of the goals of programmes geared to assure nutritional security and disease prevention are discussed. The r...

Eliminating the Inappropriate use of Antipsychotics in Residents with Dementia by Using a Multidisciplinary Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) Committee
The use of atypical antipsychotic drugs in long term care facilities continues to be the subject of news and government reports. These reports have generated concern about the utilization of antipsychotic drugs in patients with dementia related disturbances. The FDA Boxed Warning statement in the antipsychotics’ product information identifies a potential increased risk of mortality in elderly individuals taking antipsychotic medications for dementia-related behavior. The 2012 American Geriatric Society Beers Criteria also recommends avoiding antipsychotic medications use for behavior problems in dementia due to an increa...
