Risk of stroke following antivenom use after venomous snakebite: correspondence
We read with great interest the epidemiological study by Hunget al.1 on the risk of stroke with antivenom use after venomous snakebite in Taiwan. According to the national medical claims data, the authors provide us with useful information and disclose that venomous snakebite is associated with an increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke after the use of antivenom after using the matching propensity score in relevant measurable covariates. We strongly agree with the comments by Yehet al.2 on the unmeasured confounders associated with stroke in the present study. Furthermore, we are concerned that other residual confounders rel...

Bilateral ptosis caused by patent foramen ovale-associated stroke
A 39-year-old woman presented with sudden onset bilateral ptosis and binocular diplopia for 3 days. The double vision was horizontal and most prominent when she was looking to the left side. The severity of symptoms does not vary over the day. She denied vertigo, headache, ocular pain, limb weakness, paresthesia, alcohol usage and botulinum toxin injection. Past medical history and family history were unremarkable. Neurological examination revealed bilateral ptosis, limited adduction in the right eye and normal pupils (Figure  1A). Other cranial nerves, extremity strength, coordination and sensory tests were intact. Deep ...

Role of MRI in Cerebral Venous Thrombosis
ConclusionDural venous occlusion can occur due to many factors as thrombosis, inflammatory conditions of the brain and tumors. Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) has long been a neglected entity because of complexities in diagnosis and non-specific clinical presentation. Conventional MRI and phase contrast MRV in conjugation with recent techniques such SWI& DWI were considered more accurate diagnostic tool, non invasive, non ionizing, with high resolution in evaluating patients with suspected cerebral venous occlusion or thrombosis. It is also considered very useful to demonstrate brain parenchymal affection, the age or ...

Current Applications of Susceptibility Weighted Images in Pediatric Neurological Diseases
ConclusionIts high susceptibility for blood products, iron depositions, and calcifications makes susceptibility-weighted imaging an important additional sequence for the diagnostic workup of pediatric brain pathologic abnormalities that should be routinely added in our department. Compared with conventional MRI sequences, susceptibility-weighted imaging may show lesions with better detail and higher sensitivity. Familiarity with the pediatric susceptibility-weighted imaging signal variance is essential to prevent misdiagnosis.

CT-angiography and Doppler ultrasonography in the evaluation of carotid artery stenosis: a comparative study
ConclusionDoppler ultrasound when performed by an experienced sonographer can be used as a reliable first line modality for carotid stenosis grading and to categorize patients as medical and potentially surgical cases. CTA can be used as a confirmatory method for patients with borderline stenosis, for presurgical planning and for patients with suspected stenosis of the intracerebral circulation.
