Osteoporosis and the long-term risk of peripheral artery disease: a population-based longitudinal follow-up study in Taiwan
ConclusionThis study found an increased long-term risk of PAD in both men and women with osteoporosis.Mini abstractOsteoporosis has been associated with increased risks of atherosclerotic diseases. However, the relationship between osteoporosis and peripheral artery disease remains uncertain. The present population-based longitudinal follow-up study showed that patients with osteoporosis are at an increased risk of developing peripheral artery disease.

Blindness increases the risk for hip fracture and vertebral fracture but not the risk for distal radius fracture: a longitudinal follow-up study using a national sample cohort
ConclusionThe risks for hip fracture and vertebral fracture were significantly higher in the blindness group. However, the risk for distal radius fracture was not related to visual impairment including blindness.

Quantification of Risk Factors for Cervical Ossification of the Posterior Longitudinal Ligament in Korean Populations: A Nationwide Population-based Case-control Study

Association of stroke subtypes with risk of hip fracture: a population-based study in Taiwan
ConclusionOverall, stroke significantly increases the incidence of HF, and the risk of HF is significantly higher in ICH patients and female gender. We should identify stroke patients at risk of HF and pay more attention to prevent them from fall in poststroke long-term care.

Functional Electrical Stimulation in a Case of Drop Foot and Atactic Gait: Expert Assessment of Contested Medical Aids.
We report on a social court case, which needed to answer the question of the medical necessity of a functional electrical stimulation orthosis prescribed to improve the function of a drop foot accompanied by an atactic gait disorder. The claimant suffered from a stroke, which had occurred several years before. Her aids were an ankle-foot-orthosis for foot lift and a wheeled walker. The current treatment was to be augmented by the disputed device. The statutory health insurance declined to meet the costs. They failed to find relevant benefits after analysis of video tapes of the patient's gait while using an electrical stim...

Risk and adverse outcomes of fractures in patients with Parkinson’s disease: two nationwide studies
Conclusions PD was associated with higher risk of fracture. Patients with PD had more complications and mortality after fracture. Fracture prevention and attention to post-fracture adverse events are needed for this susceptible population.

Increased risk of cardiovascular events in end-stage renal disease patients with osteoporosis: a nationwide population-based cohort study
Conclusions The results showed that osteoporosis was significantly associated with the subsequent risk of cardiovascular events in patients with ESRD. When encountering patients with ESRD and osteoporosis, physicians should be alert to the subsequent cardiovascular risk in incident dialysis patients to prevent the subsequent occurrence of these adverse events.
