Nurses' performance of using a screening tool to screen swallowing functions among hospitalized patients with acute stroke.
Conclusion: A screening tool developed for nurses can help nurses to assess swallowing functions and accurately identify dysphagia among patients with acute stroke. Training on using the screening tool and making proper nursing care plans are needed for nurses to improve screening accuracy and competency, and further improve quality of care for stroke patients with dysphagia. Family History of Stroke Among African Americans and Its Association With Risk Factors, Knowledge, Perceptions, and Exercise
Conclusions: Family history of stroke was common in this sample; however, it did not translate into better understanding of stroke or better exercise behaviors and intentions. More can be done to identify African Americans with a FHS, especially those with multiple risk factors, to educate them about the significance of FHS while promoting lifestyle change and self-management.

Evaluation of Nursing Documentation Completion of Stroke Patients in the Emergency Department: A Pre-Post Analysis Using Flowsheet Templates and Clinical Decision Support.
Abstract The primary aim of this performance improvement project was to determine whether the electronic health record implementation of stroke-specific nursing documentation flowsheet templates and clinical decision support alerts improved the nursing documentation of eligible stroke patients in seven stroke-certified emergency departments. Two system enhancements were introduced into the electronic record in an effort to improve nursing documentation: disease-specific documentation flowsheets and clinical decision support alerts. Using a pre-post design, project measures included six stroke management goals as d...

Research on the Cause of Death for Severe Stroke Patients
ConclusionsThe most common cause of death in stroke patients was damage to the central nervous system. Independent risk factors were brain herniation, multiple organ failure, dyslipidemia, community‐acquired lung infection, the use of mechanical ventilation, hypoproteinemia, a history of hypertension, and hospital‐acquired pneumonia. Clinicians should be aware of the presence and possible effects of these conditions. Early prevention, monitoring and intervention to modify controllable risk factors will improve patient prognosis. Relevance to clinical practiceClinicians should be aware of the multiple independent risk f...

Interventions for maintaining nasogastric feeding after stroke: an integrative review of effectiveness and acceptability
ConclusionCurrent clinical practice is underpinned by assumptions around the acceptability of NL and HM to secure NGTs. This results in reliance on consensual judgement between professional, patients and their families to guide their use among individuals with dysphagia after stroke. Further research is required to assess the effectiveness of HM and acceptability of both NL and HM among stroke patients to inform guideline development. Relevance to Clinical PracticeGiven the lack of evidence on the acceptability of HM and NL among stroke patients to inform evidence‐based guidelines and protocols, healthcare professionals ...
