Adult simulation and demonstration of nurse competency with neurological assessment
Nurses work in challenging environments and vast amounts of information are shared on a continual basis. Changes in health care and bedside nursing are constant which make maintaining competency in this dynamic environment challenging. In addition, as documentation has transitioned to electronic medical records, new challenges have been created. The purpose of this paper is to describe an educational intervention using a live standardized patient (actor) simulation with staff nurses that care for patients after a stroke or carotid intervention.

Reducing Stroke Risk Among Young Adult African Americans: A Feasibility Study
Abstract African Americans are disproportionately affected by stroke and its modifiable risk factors, and strategies are needed to help African Americans adopt healthy lifestyles early in life. The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of the Stroke Counseling for Risk Reduction (SCORRE) intervention, a tailored, theory‐based intervention consisting of a motivational video of young African American stroke survivors, the American Heart Association's Life's Simple 7® (LS7) risk assessment and education tool, and a 6‐week behavioral risk reduction diary. Feasibility and changes in theoretical variables were...

Fatigue, dyspnea, and intermittent symptoms are associated with treatment-seeking delay for symptoms of atrial fibrillation before diagnosis
Conclusion: Experiencing fatigue, dyspnea and intermittent symptoms produced symptom representations and emotional and behavioral responses associated with treatment-seeking delay. There is a critical need to develop and test educational interventions to increase awareness of the spectrum and characteristics of AF symptoms and appropriate treatment-seeking behaviors.

Pain: a content review of undergraduate pre-registration nurse education in the United Kingdom
Pain is a global health issue with poor assessment and management of pain associated with serious disability and detrimental socio economic consequences. Pain is also a closely associated symptom of the three major causes of death in the developed world; Coronary Heart Disease, Stroke and Cancer. There is a significant body of work which indicates that current nursing practice has failed to address pain as a priority, resulting in poor practice and unnecessary patient suffering.Additionally nurse education appears to lack focus or emphasis on the importance of pain assessment and its management.

A Community ‐Engaged Assessment of Barriers and Facilitators to Rapid Stroke Treatment
Abstract Treatment for acute ischemic stroke must be initiated within hours of stroke symptom onset, and the sooner it is administered, the better. In South Carolina, 76% of the population can access expert stroke care, and rural hospitals may provide specialized treatment using telemedicine, but many stroke sufferers seek care too late to achieve full benefit. Using a community‐engaged approach in a southern rural community, we explored barriers and facilitators to early stroke care and implications for improvement. The Community‐Engaged Assessment to facilitate Stroke Elimination (CEASE) study was guided by a communi...

Gender differences in feelings and knowledge about stroke
ConclusionStroke knowledge is poor among men and women. Higher level of education is a predictor of stroke knowledge among both genders. Gender‐specific differences in stroke risk factors and feelings about stroke in different sub‐populations should be taken into account to improve prevention of stroke through education programmes. Relevance to clinical practiceHealth education on stroke prevention should be tailored to population groups differing in level of education. Health promotion recommendations should be provided by nurses with regard to beliefs of both men and women regarding prevention of stroke.

Simulation Training in Early Emergency Response (STEER).
This study aimed to test a simulation curriculum based on institutional priorities using high-intensity, short-duration, frequent in situ content delivery based on deliberate practice. The study design was a prospective, single-center, mixed-methods quasi-experimental study. Scenarios used in this study were ventricular fibrillation, opiate-related respiratory depression, syncopal fall, and hemorrhagic stroke. The convenience sample included 41 teams (147 participants). Improvements were noted in initiating chest compressions (p = .018), time to check blood glucose (p = .046), and identification of heparin as a contributor...
