Direct Cost Related to Stroke: A Longitudinal Analysis of Survivors After Discharge From a Rehabilitation Hospital
Conclusion In the first poststroke year, direct costs have remained stable over time and can be predicted by the level of education and physical functioning. The identification of specific direct cost predictors would be helpful for developing more socially and economically tailored interventions for stroke survivors in their first year after their stroke.

Identification and Management of Ischemic Stroke in the Postanesthesia Care Unit
This report details the case of a 63-year-old male experiencing a stroke in the immediate postoperative period after total knee arthroplasty. Risk for perioperative stroke is influenced by age, sex, ethnicity, comorbidities, and some medications. The depressed neurocognitive state of patients recovering from anesthesia warrants special consideration for the identification and management of perioperative stroke.

Community-Based Stroke Recognition Education and Response: An Evidence-Based Intervention Project.
CONCLUSIONS: FAST was simple to teach and engaging for participants. Using the FAST curriculum in senior center populations increased the participants' awareness of stroke signs and symptoms, and their willingness to activate the 911 emergency system. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Educational interventions in the community with older adults can produce increased awareness of stroke symptoms and willingness to respond when necessary. The Efficacy of a Comprehensive Reminder System to Improve Health Behaviors and Blood Pressure Control in Hypertensive Ischemic Stroke Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Conclusion: At 3 months, use of the Comprehensive Reminder System based on the Health Belief Model, yielded improvement in most health behaviors and blood pressure control in hypertensive ischemic stroke patients. Continued implementation of this intervention protocol is warranted to determine the long-term effect. Smoking and alcohol use behaviors need to be targeted with a different intervention.

Correlations Among Self-Rated Health, Chronic Disease, and Healthcare Utilization in Widowed Older Adults in Taiwan
Conclusions/Implications for Practice: These findings identified that chronic diseases and healthcare utilization correlated strongly with self-rated health for widowed older adults. Therefore, self-rated health may be used as a screening tool by the National Health Insurance System in Taiwan, and the results may be referenced by public health officials who are responsible for developing welfare strategies to promote healthy aging among the widowed in Taiwan.
