Hospitalization Within the First Year After Stroke: The Dijon Stroke Registry Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Stroke survivors are at high risk of hospitalization after the episode, and subsequent admission is associated with poor survival, thus highlighting the need for follow-up interventions after discharge to prevent readmission.

Job Strain and the Risk of Stroke: An Individual-Participant Data Meta-Analysis Brief Reports
Conclusion— Job strain may be associated with an increased risk of ischemic stroke, but further research is needed to determine whether interventions targeting job strain would reduce stroke risk beyond existing preventive strategies.

Regional Availability of Mechanical Embolectomy for Acute Ischemic Stroke in California, 2009 to 2010 Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— In California, most patients with stroke lived within reasonable ground transport distances from centers that performed ≥1 mechanical embolectomy in a 2-year period. The probability of receiving mechanical embolectomy for acute ischemic stroke was associated with living in close geographic proximity to these hospitals.

Effects of Blood Pressure-Lowering Treatment in Different Subtypes of Acute Ischemic Stroke Brief Reports
Conclusions— The results suggest that the effect of blood pressure–lowering treatment with candesartan may differ according to different types of acute ischemic stroke, but this needs to be confirmed in future trials. Efficiency of unimanual and bimanual reach in persons with and without stroke.
CONCLUSION: Motor efficiency of the unimpaired upper extremity may be adversely influenced when yoked with the impaired limb during symmetrical simple movements in persons with stroke. As such, motor efficiency is not exclusively limited to the impaired side, the effects of which may be task dependent. PMID: 25776121 [PubMed - in process]

The impact of pain on health-related quality of life 3 months after stroke.
CONCLUSION: The presence and intensity of pain have significant negative effects on HRQoL in stroke survivors. Interventions for pain could make a valuable contribution to improving HRQoL in stroke survivors. PMID: 25906672 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

B-Type Natriuretic Peptides Help in Cardioembolic Stroke Diagnosis: Pooled Data Meta-Analysis Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Natriuretic peptides are strongly increased in cardioembolic strokes. Future multicentre prospective studies comparing BNP and NT-proBNP might aid in finding the optimal biomarker, the best time point, and the optimal cutoff points for cardioembolic stroke identification.

Short-Term Blood Pressure Variability in Acute Stroke: Post Hoc Analysis of the Controlling Hypertension and Hypotension Immediately Post Stroke and Continue or Stop Post-Stroke Antihypertensives Collaborative Study Trials Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— When derived from casual cuff BP measures, short-term BPV is not a useful predictor of early (2 weeks) outcome after acute stroke. Differing methodology may account for the discordance with previous studies indicating long-term (casual BPV) and short-term (beat-to-beat BPV) prognostic value. Obesity Increases Risk of Ischemic Stroke in Young Adults Brief Reports
Conclusions— These results indicate that obesity is a risk factor for young onset ischemic stroke and suggest that this association may be partially mediated through hypertension, diabetes mellitus, or other variables associated with these conditions.

Sitting time and physical activity after stroke: physical ability is only part of the story.
CONCLUSIONS: Physical factors, such as walking ability, may influence sitting and activity time in people with stroke, yet much of the variance in daily sitting time remains unexplained. Large prospective studies are required to understand the drivers of activity and sitting time. PMID: 26257146 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Trends in Stroke Incidence and 28-Day Case Fatality in a Nationwide Stroke Registry of a Multiethnic Asian Population Clinical Sciences
Conclusion— This is the first countrywide hospital-based registry study in a multiethnic Asian population, and it revealed marked overall reductions in stroke incidence and case fatality. However, it also identified important population groups with less favorable trends, especially younger adults and those of Malay ethnicity.

Contributions of voluntary activation deficits to hand weakness after stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Although extrinsic finger muscles could be successfully recruited electrically, voluntary excitation of these muscles was substantially limited in stroke survivors. Thus, finger weakness after stroke results predominantly from the inability to fully activate the muscle voluntarily. PMID: 26427599 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
