Prognostic Significance of Blood Pressure Variability on Beat-to-Beat Monitoring After Transient Ischemic Attack and Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—Beat-to-beat BPV predicted recurrent stroke and cardiovascular events, independently of mean systolic BP and risk factors but short-term BPV on ambulatory BP monitoring did not. Beat-to-beat BPV may be a useful additional marker of cardiovascular risk.

Novel Telestroke Program Improves Thrombolysis for Acute Stroke Across 21 Hospitals of an Integrated Healthcare System Clinical Sciences
This study included 310 patients treated with alteplase in the pre–EXpediting the PRrocess of Evaluating and Stopping Stroke period and 557 patients treated with alteplase in the EXpediting the PRrocess of Evaluating and Stopping Stroke period. After implementation, alteplase administrations increased to 62/mo from 34/mo at baseline (P

Content validity and satisfaction with a caregiver-integrated web-based rehabilitation intervention for persons with stroke.
Conclusions The CARE-CITE intervention may be a viable program for caregivers of patients with stroke. Currently a pilot study is underway to evaluate the impact of the intervention on caregiver mental health, family conflict around stroke recovery and stroke survivor upper extremity function. Modified Approach to Stroke Rehabilitation (MAStR): feasibility study of a method to apply procedural memory concepts to transfer training.
CONCLUSIONS: Feasibility was demonstrated for an innovative application of procedural memory concepts to stroke rehabilitation. All rehabilitation disciplines were successfully trained. MAStR was well-tolerated and liked by rehabilitation staff and patients. These results support pursuit of a Phase II pilot study. PMID: 29609504 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Microbiological Etiologies of Pneumonia Complicating Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—Although the analysis was limited by small and heterogeneous study populations, limiting determination of microbiological causality, this review suggests aerobic Gram-negative bacilli and Gram-positive cocci are frequently associated with pneumonia complicating stroke. This supports the need for appropriately designed studies to determine microbial cause and a consensus-based approach in antibiotic usage and further targeted antibiotic treatment trials for enhanced antibiotic stewardship.

The role of subjective cognitive complaints and depressive symptoms in social re-integration following stroke: a mediation explanation in a cross-sectional sample.
Conclusions Subjective cognitive complaints are common in long-term outcome following stroke and predict difficulty in community reintegration. However, this relationship is mediated by variation in emotional status. Therefore, addressing cognitive complaints through cognitive rehabilitation programs that include components to improve mood (for example, building self-efficacy or confidence) may also improve community reintegration post-stroke. Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and the risk of stroke recurrence in patients with a history of minor ischemic stroke in Japan: a retrospective analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with a history of mild ischemic stroke had low MVPA and high VFL values, which together may be a risk factor for RIS. PMID: 30207894 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Neuroimaging, serum biomarkers, and patient characteristics as predictors of upper limb functioning 12 weeks after acute stroke: an observational, prospective study.
CONCLUSION: ASPECTS score ≥ 8 within 24 hours and S100β protein < 140.5 ng/L at 48 hours predict better upper limb functioning, while advanced age predicts worse upper limb functioning 12 weeks after stroke. PMID: 30213243 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Psychometric properties of the Chinese-version Stroke and Aphasia Quality of Life Scale 39-generic version (SAQOL-39g).
CONCLUSIONS: The Chinese-version SAQOL-39g has excellent reliability, validity, and feasibility for measuring the QOL of Chinese post-stroke aphasia patients. The consistency between self-report and proxy-report forms was good, implying that the proxy-report form can be used to assess the QOL of post-stroke aphasia patients. Validity and reliability of fatigue severity scale in stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: FSS is a valid and reliable scale to measure fatigue in stroke. FSS is not sensitive to differentiate fatigue in stroke from the control subjects with orthopedic problems with similar age and gender. PMID: 30475156 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Economic evaluation of transferring first-stroke survivors to rehabilitation wards: A 10-year longitudinal, population-based study.
Conclusions: The 10-year post-stroke follow-up showed that transferring patients to the rehabilitation ward is more cost effective than rehabilitation without transfer to the rehabilitation ward and no rehabilitation. PMID: 31535585 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Standing postural stability during galvanic vestibular stimulation is associated with the motor function of the hemiplegic lower extremity post-stroke.
Conclusions: Motor dysfunction directly causes standing postural instability during vestibular stimulation, even though sensory information suggests normal peripheral vestibular function. Therefore, motor dysfunction of the hemiplegic lower extremity might lead to inhibition of normal standing postural stability. PMID: 31618124 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Feasibility and trend of pulmonary function in a pilot trial of aerobic walking exercise in non-ambulatory stroke survivors.
Conclusions: In non-ambulatory stroke survivors, aerobic walking exercise is feasible and safe. Also, the results are promising and suggest that aerobic walking exercise may improve lung function; more data are needed. PMID: 31622173 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
