Influence of Sex on Stroke Prognosis: A Demographic, Clinical, and Molecular Analysis
Conclusion Our data suggest that women who suffer from IS present with a poorer functional outcome than men at 3-months, regardless of other preclinical and clinical factors during the acute phase. These relationships seem to be mediated by atrial dysfunction and inflammation. The inflammatory response is slightly higher in women; however, there are no sex differences in their functional behavior. There is a probable relationship between the molecular marker of atrial dysfunction NT-proBNP and worse functional outcome in women, and the connection seems to be more important in cardioembolic stroke patients. In patients wi...

Poor Awareness of Strokeā€”A Hospital-Based Study from South India: An Urgent Need For Awareness Programs
Background: Stroke treatment has reached a new benchmark with thrombolytic therapy. However, India has witnessed a tremendous increase in morbidity and mortality of stroke over the past few decades. The prime deciding factor is initiation of treatment within the time window, which requires early recognition of stroke symptoms. We wished to analyze the lacunae in the stroke knowledge in our population. This hospital-based study assessed awareness of the public regarding stroke. Methods: Two trained medical students interviewed accompanying relatives using a structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Statistical Packa...

A Novel Method for Measuring Oxidative Stress in Patients with Stroke Symptoms (S52.005)
CONCLUSIONS: These results demonstrate the ability of ORP to identify oxidative stress and amount of antioxidant reserves in a stroke population. We propose ORP monitoring as a potentially useful tool in evaluation of acute stroke patients.Disclosure: Dr. Wagner has received personal compensation for activities with Genentech, Inc.
