Implementation of a Structured Guideline-Based Program for the Secondary Prevention of Ischemic Stroke in China Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— The implementation of a program to improve adherence to secondary ischemic stroke prevention efforts in China is feasible, but these programs had only a limited impact on adherence and no impact on 1-year outcomes. Hyponatremia in the Prognosis of Acute Ischemic Stroke
Background: Hyponatremia is a risk factor for stroke and cardiovascular disease. Even mild hyponatremia is associated with increased 30-day mortality after myocardial infarction, and it has recently shown to increase the 3-year mortality after a stroke. Sex Differences in Trends of Incidence and Mortality of First-Ever Stroke in Rural Tianjin, China, From 1992 to 2012 Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— There was a significant increase in the incidence of first-ever stroke in women annually and a declining trend in the male/female rate ratio in rural China during the past 21 years. These results suggest that stroke will become one of the major diseases affecting women in future decades in China.

Metabolic Syndrome Associated with Ischemic Stroke among the Mexican Hispanic Population in the El Paso/US–Mexico Border Region
In this report, data were collected in the El Paso/US–Mexico border region, where 82% of the population is Mexican Hispanic, through a retrospective study of ischemic stroke from 2005-2010. Odds ratios (ORs), 95% confidence intervals, logistic regression, and multivariate analysis of the ORs adjusted for other variables, were used to analyze the effects of various risk factors on ischemic stroke. The Long-term Nutritional Status in Stroke Patients and its Predictive Factors
Conclusions: Malnutrition was highly prevalent, with an important role of change in food intake and food preferences, which could result from brain lesions and specific regimens. Living in an institution needs consideration, as its negative effects can be prevented.

Changes in Functional Outcome Over the First Year After Stroke: An Observational Study From the Swedish Stroke Register Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Transition from ADL independence to dependence was observed in a high proportion of patients between 3 and 12 months, challenging the common belief that functioning after stroke is stable beyond 3 months. Clinical profile, risk factors, etiology and outcome of stroke in young Filipino adults. (P7.147)
Conclusion - Stroke occurs at a younger age in Filipinos compared to other Asian and European countries. The incidence of stroke in young Filipinos were similar to Asian figures but higher compared to European studies. Hypertension is the most common risk factor in the world followed by diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia. In Filipinos however, cultural vices such as smoking and alcoholism were the second and third leading risk factors. Association of Hemoglobin A1c and Baseline Ischemic Stroke Severity: A Population-Based Study (P1.187)
Conclusions: We found that elevated HbA1c was associated with decreased stroke severity at presentation. However, this effect is mediated by the history of DM rather than a specific dose-effect of glycemic control. Circulating biomarkers and incident ischemic stroke in the Framingham Offspring Study
Conclusions: Higher levels of 4 biomarkers—CRP, tHcy, TNFR2, and VEGF—increased risk of IIS and improved the predictive ability of the Framingham Stroke Risk Profile score. Further research is warranted to explore their role as potential therapeutic targets.

Serum matrix metalloproteinase-9 levels and prognosis of acute ischemic stroke
Conclusions: Higher serum MMP-9 levels in the acute phase of ischemic stroke were associated with increased risk of mortality and major disability, suggesting that serum MMP-9 could be an important prognostic factor for ischemic stroke.

Disparities among Asians and Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders with ischemic stroke
Conclusions: Asians, NHPI, and whites with ischemic stroke have substantially different cardiovascular risk factors. Targeted secondary prevention will be important in reducing disparities among these racial groups.

The Impact Factors on the Cost and Length of Stay among Acute Ischemic Stroke
Conclusions: Age 65 and over, atrial fibrillation, stroke treatment, and subtypes were the significant predictive factors affecting hospital costs and LOS. Compared to other countries, Taiwan spent the least while Canada had the highest expense. The United States had the shortest LOS (6 days) in contrast to Canada with the longest LOS (34-47 days). Regarding mean daily cost of stroke, the United States had the highest cost per day while China spent the least.
