Non-calcified active atherosclerosis plaque detection with 18F-NaF and 18F-FDG PET/CT dynamic imaging
This study was aimed to assess the behavior of 18F-sodium fluoride (18F-NaF) and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) uptake in the aorta and iliac arteries as a function of plaque density on CT images. We report metabolically active artery plaques associated to inflammation in the absence of calcification. 18 elderly volunteers were recruited and imaged with computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography (PET) with 18F-NaF and 18F-FDG. A total of 1338 arterial segments were analyzed, 766 were non-calcified and 572 had calcifications. For both 18F-NaF and 18F-FDG, the mean SUV values were found statistically signifi...

The uptake pattern of 18F-sodium fluoride radioligand in brain tissue after cerebral infarction
In this study, we measured the maximum and mean standardized uptake value (SUVmax and SUVmean) of NaF uptake level in the cerebral infarct region between lesions with and without diffusion weighted image (DWI) positivity, indicating acute ischemic cell death. Correlation analysis was performed between NaF uptake levels and imaging and clinical variables, including neurological severity. The NaF uptake levels were significantly higher in DWI positive lesions than in negative lesions (SUVmax: 2.0 [0.60-4.2] versus 0.20 [0.10-0.40], p = 0.021 by Mann-Whitney U test). The intensity of NaF uptake (SUVmax) was significantly corr...

Common carotid segmentation in < sup > 18 < /sup > F-sodium fluoride PET/CT scans: head-to-head comparison of artificial intelligence-based and manual method
CONCLUSIONS: CNN-based segmentation was much faster and provided SUVmean values virtually identical to manually obtained ones, suggesting CNN-based analysis as a promising substitute of slow and cumbersome manual processing. Highly efficient radiosynthesis and biological evaluation of 18Fsafinamide, a radiolabelled anti-parkinsonian drug for PET imaging
ChemMedChem. 2022 Sep 6. doi: 10.1002/cmdc.202200472. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAs an add-on drug approved for Parkinson's disease treatment, safinamide has multiple functions, such as selective and reversible monoamine oxidase-B inhibition, voltage-sensitive sodium/potassium channel blockage, and glutamate release inhibition. Meanwhile, safinamide shows tremendous therapeutic potential in the context of other central nervous system diseases (e.g., ischaemic stroke, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, depression, etc.). In this work, [18F]safinamide, which is safinamide labelled by the positron-emitting radionuclide [18F]fl...

Thoracic Aortic < sup > 18 < /sup > F-Sodium Fluoride Activity and Ischemic Stroke in Patients With Established Cardiovascular Disease
CONCLUSIONS: In patients with established cardiovascular disease, thoracic aortic 18F-sodium fluoride activity is associated with the progression of atherosclerosis and future ischemic stroke. Arterial 18F-sodium fluoride activity identifies localized areas of atherosclerotic disease activity that are directly linked to disease progression and downstream regional clinical atherothrombotic events. Two-year change in 18F-sodium fluoride uptake in the carotid arteries of healthy subjects and angina pectoris patients
Conclusions: Slightly higher NaF uptake in the angina group indicated more ongoing carotid microcalcification at both time points in patients than in healthy subjects. The 2-year changes were very small in both groups, albeit with a tendency of slight decreases among healthy controls, suggesting a more dynamic, waxing and waning, process in these compared to a slow, but more consistent, progression in angina patients despite statin therapy in half of these.

Early Experience with 18F-Fluoride Positron Emission Tomography- Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Patients with Symptomatic Carotid Artery Stenosis Undergoing Carotid Endarterectomy
Introduction: Carotid endarterectomy is an established surgical intervention that is associatedwith a reduction in the future risk of stroke in symptomatic patients. However, the identification of culprit carotid plaque remains challenging for number of reasons including the suboptimal evaluation of carotid plaque morphology, disease activity and future stroke risk stratification.
