Device use for proximal anastomosis on ascending aorta in off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting.
CONCLUSIONS: Clinical safety of Device use in CABG comparable to No-touch for mortality and morbidity. Hemostasis may be a key issue for accomplishing higher level quality control when devices used in proximal anastomosis of CABG. PMID: 33065052 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Benchmarking Outcomes: Reoperation for Aortic Valve Patient Prosthesis Mismatch.
CONCLUSIONS: Reoperative surgery for PPM is complex but may be performed with good outcomes and low mortality in experienced centers. These data provide excellent clinical and hemodynamic benchmarks for the treatment of PPM in the current era of valve-in-valve TAVR. PMID: 32980325 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Preparing for Bundled Payments: Impact of Complications Post-Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting on Costs.
CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative characteristics had less of an impact on costs post-CABG than postoperative complications. Postoperative complications vary in their impact on internal costs, with reoperation, stroke and renal failure having the greatest impact. In preparation for bundled payments, hospitals should focus on understanding and preventing drivers of high cost. PMID: 32896546 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Perceval sutureless aortic valve implantation: mid-term outcomes.
CONCLUSIONS: After more than 11 years of continued clinical use of the Perceval sutureless valve, we observe low mortality and stroke rates, with good hemodynamic behaviour of the valve. None of our patients was reoperated for SVD. Because of the key benefits of this rapid-deployment valve, it has an added value in surgical aortic valve replacement. Very long-term outcome of Minimally Invasive Direct Coronary Artery Bypass.
CONCLUSIONS: Very long-term clinical outcome of MIDCAB is satisfactory in terms of survival and freedom from MACCE. MIDCAB significantly reduces in-hospital stay and blood transfusions when compared to full sternotomy bypass surgery on left descending coronary artery and appears to effectively improve prognosis in terms of cardiac- and all-causes events. Mitral Valve Surgery for Papillary Muscle Rupture: Outcomes in 1,342 Patients from the STS Database.
CONCLUSIONS: These data provide a national overview of outcomes following MVS for PMR. Rates of mortality and morbidity are high but the majority of patients survive operative intervention in this high-risk and otherwise lethal condition. PMID: 32376352 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Is Resident Training Safe In Cardiac Surgery?
CONCLUSIONS: Resident training is safe in cardiac surgery without compromising the quality of patient care. PMID: 32165177 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Microplegia vs. 4:1 Blood Cardioplegia: Effectiveness and Cost Savings in Complex Cardiac Operations.
CONCLUSIONS: Our simplified microplegia technique offers several advantages over Buckberg cardioplegia without compromising myocardial protection or safety in complex, multi-component operations with extended aortic clamp times. PMID: 32160958 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Long-Term Single Centre Outcomes of Patients with Chronic Renal Dialysis Undergoing Cardiac Surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: Cardiac surgery in DD-CRF patients is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Interestingly, overall mortality was mainly none cardiac-related, where elderly patients or those presented with CHF had the worst life expectancy. However, subsequent kidney transplantation positively impact long-term survival in such patients. PMID: 31563486 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Epiaortic Ultrasound to Prevent Stroke in Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting.
CONCLUSIONS: Avoiding aortic manipulation is associated with the lowest risk of stroke in patients undergoing CABG. When manipulation of the ascending aorta is planned, EAU is effective in guiding the surgical strategy to reduce the risk for embolic stroke in these patients. PMID: 31421104 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Increased Glucose Variability Is Associated With Major Adverse Events After Coronary Artery Bypass.
CONCLUSIONS: Increased 24-hour, but not 12-hour, postoperative GV following CABG is a predictor of poor outcomes. Preoperative HbA1c is not associated with MAEs after adjusting for postoperative mean glucose and GV. PMID: 31400320 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Impact of Preoperative Clopidogrel on Outcomes Following Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting.
CONCLUSIONS: CABG can be safely performed in patients with recent Clopidogrel exposure with no increased risk of early or late mortality. However, CABG should be delayed for at least 5 days if clinically feasible to minimize transfusions and reoperation risk. In patients with more urgent indications, delaying CABG at least 3 days can mitigate but not eliminate the increased bleeding risk. PMID: 31039353 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Outcomes of Isolated Tricuspid Valve Surgery Have Improved in the Modern Era.
CONCLUSIONS: In the current era with careful patient selection and periprocedural management, isolated TV surgery can be performed with lower morbidity and mortality than has traditionally been reported with good long term survival. These outcomes can also serve as a benchmark for catheter-based tricuspid valve intervention outcomes. PMID: 30951698 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Addition of Aortic Root Procedures during Elective Arch Surgery Does Not Confer Added Morbidity nor Mortality.
CONCLUSIONS: The addition of an aortic root procedure during elective aortic arch surgery lengthens cardiopulmonary bypass and aortic crossclamp times but does not increase postoperative morbidity nor mortality. PMID: 30851260 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Impact of Complications on Resource Utilization during 90-day CABG Bundle for Medicare Beneficiaries.
CONCLUSIONS: Medicare beneficiaries that experience adverse events during their index CABG hospitalization will significantly impact that hospital's financial risk. The challenge under the voluntary CABG bundled payment program will be to monitor and reduce adverse events and managing the services consumed by Medicare beneficiaries experiencing adverse events delivered at all the venues of care.
