Association of psoriasis and stroke in end-stage renal disease patients
CONCLUSIONS: Contrary to prior research in the general population, psoriasis in ESRD patients was not associated with the risk of stroke after controlling for various demographic and clinical parameters. Our finding emphasizes the importance of controlling for a variety of factors in population studies examining associations of diseases and risk factors.PMID:37716600 | DOI:10.1016/j.amjms.2023.09.014

R.A.P.I.D.O. : Acronym & Campaign Helps Spanish Speakers Recognize a Stroke
FRIDAY, Sept. 15, 2023 -- The American Stroke Association is promoting the acronym R. Á.P.I.D.O. as a way to raise awareness among Hispanic Americans about stroke symptoms and the need for quick action. Every second counts when someone has had a...

Effect of exoskeleton robot-assisted training on gait function in chronic stroke survivors: a systematic review of randomised controlled trials
Conclusion ERAT could be an efficient intervention to improve gait function for individuals who had a chronic stroke. However, more rigorously designed trials are required to draw more solid evidence. PROSPERO registration number CRD42023410796.

Even a Mild Head Injury Raises the Odds for Stroke
WEDNESDAY, Sept. 13, 2023 -- Any head injury — even a mild one — raises a person’s risk of later having an ischemic stroke. Having multiple injuries increases that risk, even more so than the severity of a single traumatic brain injury (TBI),...

Higher versus lower fractions of inspired oxygen or targets of arterial oxygenation for adults admitted to the intensive care unit
CONCLUSIONS: In adult ICU patients, it is still not possible to draw clear conclusions about the effects of higher versus lower oxygenation strategies on all-cause mortality, SAEs, quality of life, lung injuries, myocardial infarction, stroke, and sepsis at maximum follow-up. This is due to low or very low-certainty evidence.PMID:37700687 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD012631.pub3

Incidence, characteristics and outcome of post-stroke recrudescence in the Chinese population: a single-centre observational study
Conclusions PSR is not uncommon in patients presenting with stroke symptoms and can be distinguished from TIA and SMs based on a combination of clinical features and trigger in the Chinese population. The neurological deficits of patients with PSR often resolve within several days following the resolution of the trigger.

Retrospective cohort study investigating synergism of air pollution and corticosteroid exposure in promoting cardiovascular and thromboembolic events in older adults
Conclusion PM2.5 and systemic corticosteroid use were independently associated with increases in CTE hospitalisations. We also found evidence of significant additive interactions between the two exposures for HF and MI/ACSs suggesting synergy between these two exposures.

Benefits of Pulmonary Vein Isolation Beyond Rhythm Control
The prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) is continually increasing, with major implications for patients and health care systems given the increased morbidity and mortality. Approximately one-third of patients with AF additionally are affected by mental health conditions (notably depression, anxiety, and perceived stress). Psychological distress conditions are independent risk factors for adverse cardiovascular outcomes (including stroke and major bleeding) in patients with AF and promote AF recurrence. Without doubt, these associations add more complexity to comprehensive treatment decisions for patients with AF.

Incidence of atrial fibrillation in cryptogenic stroke with patent foramen ovale closure: protocol for the prospective, observational PFO-AF study
Introduction After closure of patent foramen ovale (PFO) due to stroke, atrial fibrillation (AF) occurs in up to one in five patients. However, data are sparse regarding the possible pre-existence of AF in these patients prior to PFO closure, and about recurrence of AF in the long term after the procedure. No prospective study to date has investigated these topics in patients with implanted cardiac monitor (ICM). The PFO-AF study (registered with ClinicalTrials.gov under the number NCT04926142) will investigate the incidence of AF occurring within 2 months after percutaneous closure of PFO in patients with prior stroke. AF...

Intervention to reduce sedentary behaviour and improve outcomes after stroke (Get Set Go): a study protocol for the process evaluation of a pilot cluster randomised controlled trial (RECREATE)
We report the protocol for the process evaluation which will address the following objectives: (1) describe and clarify causal assumptions about the intervention, and its mechanisms of impact; (2) assess implementation fidelity; (3) explore views, perceptions and acceptability of the intervention to staff, stroke survivors and their carers; (4) establish the contextual factors that influence implementation, intervention mechanisms and outcomes. Methods and analysis This pilot trial will be conducted in 15 UK-based National Health Service stroke services. This process evaluation study, underpinned by the Medical Research C...

Remote interventions for informal caregivers of patients with stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusions Current evidence suggests that remote interventions for informal caregivers of patients who had a stroke have no significant superiority over traditional interventions. However, the quality of the included studies was low and more high-quality evidence is required to determine the possible impacts of remote interventions. PROSPERO registration number CRD42022313544.

Cell salvage for minimising perioperative allogeneic blood transfusion in adults undergoing elective surgery
CONCLUSIONS: In some types of elective surgery, cell salvage may reduce the need for and volume of allogeneic transfusion, alongside evidence of no difference in adverse events, when compared to no cell salvage. Further research is required to establish why other surgeries show no benefit from CS, through further analysis of the current evidence. More large RCTs in under-reported specialities are needed to expand the evidence base for exploring the impact of CS.PMID:37681564 | PMC:PMC10486190 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD001888.pub5
