Multiple risk factors and ischaemic stroke in the elderly Asian population with and without atrial fibrillation. An analysis of 425,600 Chinese individuals without prior stroke.
In conclusion, an increasing cluster of multiple cardiovascular risk factors (besides AF) contributes to a greater risk for ischaemic stroke, especially in the elderly population. If elderly and with multiple risk factors, non-AF patients may have a risk of incident ischaemic stroke that is comparable or even higher than patients with AF, suggesting that the incremental stroke risk attributable to AF is marginal in such 'high risk' patients. Predicting Adverse Events beyond Stroke and Bleeding with the ABC-Stroke and ABC-Bleeding Scores in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation: The Murcia AF Project.
CONCLUSION:  In AF patients, the ABC-stroke and ABC-bleeding scores demonstrated similar predictive ability for outcomes beyond stroke and bleeding, including MI, acute HF, a composite of cardiovascular events, and all-cause deaths. This is consistent with nonspecificity of biomarkers that predict "sick" patients or poor prognosis overall. PMID: 32506417 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Comparison of risk of serious cardiovascular events after haemorrhagic versus ischaemic stroke: a population-based study
CONCLUSIONS: The risk of subsequent cardiovascular events is similar between patients with incident haemorrhagic or ischaemic stroke. Patients with previous haemorrhagic stroke should be regarded as a population at very-high risk of subsequent CVD.PMID:35688459 | DOI:10.1055/a-1873-9092

Female sex as an independent risk factor for stroke in atrial fibrillation: Possible mechanisms.
The objective of this review is to describe the potential mechanisms behind the increased risk of stroke in AF associated with female sex. PMID: 24305974 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Essen Stroke Risk Score Predicts Clinical Outcomes in Heart Failure Patients With Preserved Ejection Fraction: Evidence From the TOPCAT trial
This study sought to determine whether the Essen Stroke Risk Score (ESRS) could predict the risks of adjudicated clinical outcomes in patients with Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) from the TOPCAT trial. Of 3,441 HFpEF patients with a mean follow-up of 3.3 years, the risk of stroke ranged from 0.32% per year at an ESRS of 1-2 points to 1.71% per year at a score of ≥6 points. Each point increase in ESRS was associated with increased risks of stroke (HR=1.33 [95% CI 1.16-1.53]) with a C-index of 0.68, as well as myocardial infarction (HR=1.60 [95% CI 1.40-1.83]; C-index, 0.75), HF hospitalization (HR=...

N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide and the risk of stroke among patients hospitalized with acute heart failure: an APEX trial substudy
ConclusionsBaseline NT-proBNP concentration was associated with short-term stroke among patients hospitalized with acute HF. Stroke risk assessment models should consider incorporation of NT-proBNP measurement.

Relationship Between Red Cell Distribution Width and Stroke in Patients With Stable Chronic Heart Failure: A Propensity Score Matching Analysis
Conclusion: In conclusion, this study demonstrated that RDW may be important hematological indices for stroke in patients with HF using propensity score analysis.

Heart failure patients have enhanced cerebral autoregulation response in acute ischemic stroke
AbstractThe cerebrovascular effects of a failing heart-pump are largely unknown. Chronic heart failure (HF) might cause pre-conditioning effect on cerebral hemodynamics but not study so far in acute stroke. We aimed to investigate if HF induces effects in dynamic cerebral autoregulation (CA), within 6  h of symptom-onset through chronic stage of ischemic stroke. We enrolled 50 patients with acute ischemic stroke. Groups with (N = 8) and without HF and 20 heathy controls were compared. Arterial blood pressure (Finometer) and cerebral blood flow velocity (transcranial Doppler) were monitored w ithin 6 and at 24 h from ...

Cessation of oral anticoagulation is an important risk factor for stroke and mortality in atrial fibrillation patients.
In conclusion, in non-valvular AF patients, cessation of OAC was independently associated with the risk of stroke, adverse cardiovascular events and mortality. Bleeding events and some variables associated with higher bleeding risk are responsible for OAC cessation. PMID: 28331926 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association of education and feedback on hypertension management with risk for stroke and cardiovascular disease
CONCLUSIONS: This study does not support an association between education and feedback on hypertension management to primary care physicians and the risk for stroke or cardiovascular outcomes. The observed differences for mortality outcomes should be interpreted with caution.PMID:35179089 | DOI:10.1080/08037051.2022.2041393
