Signal detection of adverse events associated with gabapentinoid use for chronic pain
CONCLUSIONS: Our study identified expected and unexpected ADE signals in GABA users. Neurological signals likely related to indications for GABA use. Signals for immunity, mental/behavior, and skin disorders were found in the FDA adverse event reporting system database. Unexpected signals of stroke and cancer require further confirmatory analyses to verify.PMID:37640024 | DOI:10.1002/pds.5685

Ischemic Stroke Management: Posthospitalization and Transition of Care
Am Fam Physician. 2023 Jul;108(1):70-77.ABSTRACTIschemic stroke is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack exist on a continuum of the same disease process. Ischemic stroke is common, and more than 85% of stroke risk is attributed to modifiable risk factors. The initial management of acute stroke is usually performed in the emergency department and hospital settings. Family physicians have a key role in follow-up, ensuring that a complete diagnostic evaluation has been performed, addressing modifiable risk factors, facilitating rehabilitation, and managing chronic s...

Early versus late injections of Botulinumtoxin type A in post-stroke spastic movement disorder: A literature review
Toxicon. 2023 May 3:107150. doi: 10.1016/j.toxicon.2023.107150. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPost-stroke spastic movement disorder (PS-SMD) is one of the main causes of severe disability in the chronic phase after stroke. The prevalence of SMD rises up with time after stroke to more than 28% in the chronic phase, and its secondary complications such as contracture, abnormal postures and/or movement patterns, spasticity-associated pain, also increases with time after stroke when physical and medical management of PS-SMD had been delayed in the early stroke phase. It has been published by several controlled studies that the...

Is now the time to reconsider risks, benefits, and limitations of estrogen preparations as a treatment for menstrually related migraine?
Expert Rev Neurother. 2023 Apr 10:1-12. doi: 10.1080/14737175.2023.2198705. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Estrogen fluctuations modulate pain threshold and play a pivotal role in the central and peripheral pathogenesis of menstrually related migraine (MRM). Estrogen-withdrawal during the perimenstrual phase of a spontaneous menstrual cycle or the hormone-free interval (HFI) of hormonal treatments seems to be the culprit.AREA COVERED: The authors report the most relevant data on risks, benefits, and limitations of exogenous estrogens as a treatment for MRM considering gynecological comorbidities associated wit...
